A Late Edo Gate on the Street
Hoashi Family Main Residence (Fushunkan) Front Gate (帆足家本家住宅（富春館）表門, omotemon) is a timber gate of the late Edo period in Nakahetsugi, Oita City, Oita Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006.
It opens on the south side of the estate, set back a little from the road, between the pawn storehouse to the west and the Western-style house to the east. It is a Munamon, a ridge gate two bays wide, under a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles, with a frontage of 3.6 metres. The central bay takes a pair of sliding wooden doors and a pair of sliding lattice doors; plastered walls fill the spaces to either side, and low flanking walls, Sodobei, extend it further still.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs assigns it to the late Edo period, the same years as the main house and the middle gate.
Why It Was Registered
Hoashi Family Main Residence (Fushunkan) Front Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency notes that it forms the frontage of a large estate yet is fairly plain in design.
A brewing family of this standing might be expected to announce itself with a long row-house gate or a heavy roofed gateway. The Hoashi did something quieter: a modest ridge gate drawn back from the road, with the earthen storehouse and the Western-style house on either side doing the work of presence. The family's standing is expressed by the whole south front, not by the gate alone.
The sliding doors are worth noticing. Rather than hinged leaves, the central bay holds solid doors and lattice doors that both slide apart, so the gate could stand open with only the lattice drawn across, admitting air and light while keeping a boundary.
What to Look For
From the road, take in the whole south front at once rather than the gate on its own: white earthen walls, a restrained timber gate and a stone-effect Western house side by side. That sequence is the face of the estate.
Close up, look at how the solid doors and the lattice doors are fitted in the central bay. Depending on which are drawn, the gate looks quite different.
Do not miss the plastered walls and flanking walls. The gate proper is only two bays, but the flanking walls stretch it sideways and make it read larger from the street.
Visiting
Hoashi Family Main Residence (Fushunkan) Front Gate faces the road, so the outside can be seen at any time. During the opening hours of Hoashi Honke Fushunkan you can pass through it into the grounds and look back at it from within.
The gate faces south, so late morning and midday light falls square on the timber of the doors. Keep clear of traffic when photographing from the road.
