The Inoue Family Residence Gate
The Inoue Family Residence Gate (井上家住宅門, Inoue-ke Jūtaku Mon) is the formal entrance to the Inoue family estate in Tsurugawachi-machi, Hita City, Oita Prefecture, built around 1914 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 31 January 2003.
It stands on the south side of the property, leading from a private lane into the forecourt of the main house, with earthen walls running off to either side. The national database records a timber structure with a tiled roof and a frontage of 2.8 metres. It belongs to the same early Taishō campaign that produced the main house.
A Gate Between Two Types
The Inoue Family Residence Gate is a Shikyakumon, a four-legged gate, roofed in Sangawara-buki pantiles. In the standard version the main posts that carry the doors stand directly beneath the ridge. Here they have been nudged slightly forward of the ridge line, which the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes as a structure in the manner of a Yakuimon. It is a subtle hybrid, and one you only notice from the side.
The gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency's description adds that simply giving the house a free-standing formal gate was a statement of the family's standing.
What to Look For
Look at the Inoue Family Residence Gate in profile if you can. The main posts sitting a little in front of the ridge are what set it apart from an ordinary four-legged gate.
Notice, too, how it locks into the earthen walls on either side, forming part of the estate's southern boundary. Step through it, and the main house's Western-style gable was meant to be the first thing a guest saw.

The Inoue Family Residence Gate faces a private lane that serves the house, so please do not walk up it. We could not confirm how much of the gate is visible from the public road.
