A Shin Buddhist Temple in Nagazoe, Nakatsu

Shogyoji Temple (正行寺, Shōgyō-ji) is a temple of the Otani branch of Jodo Shinshu in Nagazoe, Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, and four of its structures from the late Edo period (1830 to 1868), the main hall, main gate, flanking walls and bell tower, were entered on the national register as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on June 21, 2013. The Otani branch, often called Shinshu Otani-ha, has its head temple at Higashi Honganji in Kyoto, and Shogyoji belongs to the branch's Kyushu district.

Jodo Shinshu, or True Pure Land Buddhism, grew out of the teaching of the monk Shinran in the 13th century. Its temples serve congregations who gather in the main hall to chant and hear sermons, which is why Shin main halls are usually generous in floor area, with a gate and a bell tower completing the set.

All four structures at Shogyoji were registered on the same day and carry consecutive numbers, 44-0202 to 44-0205: the main hall is 0202, the bell tower 0203, the gate 0204 and the walls 0205. They were also registered under the same criterion, as buildings that contribute to the historic landscape of the country. The listing reads less as praise for four separate buildings than as recognition of how gate, walls, belfry and hall work together as one temple front.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs database dates every one of them to the late Edo period and gives the span as 1830 to 1868. No public record found during research for this page names the year each was raised or who paid for it.

Unge and the Scholarly Name of Shogyoji

The priest who carried Shogyoji's name into wider learned circles was Unge (雲華), who headed the temple in the later Edo period. Nakatsu City's list of cultural properties describes him as a Shogyoji priest who lived from 1773 to 1850 and was admired both for his scholarship and for his calligraphy and painting. The city protects his grave as a municipal cultural property.

The same list records a framed name board, or hengaku, owned by the temple and written by Okudaira Masataka, the 5th Okudaira lord of the Nakatsu domain. The city values it as evidence of the friendship between Masataka and Unge, a link between the castle town's ruler and a priest on its outskirts drawn in ink.

Shogyoji also holds a manuscript that drew attention in early 2024. The Kyogyoshinsho is the central work of Shinran, founder of Jodo Shinshu, and the Bando manuscript is the only copy in his own hand. A transcription of that manuscript was found at Shogyoji, and to mark 800 years since the Kyogyoshinsho was completed, the Nakatsu City History Museum put this "Shogyoji copy" on display. It was the first time the manuscript had been shown outside the temple.

Walking the Shogyoji Temple Grounds

The grounds of Shogyoji Temple face east. The main hall stands at the far western end and looks straight down the approach path toward the gate. The gate sits on that path, and from its main posts the flanking walls run out to the north and south before turning at right angles, closing off the space in front of the temple. Together the walls measure 20 meters.

The bell tower is on the eastern side of the grounds, just south of the gate. Standing on the approach and facing the gate, you will find it off to your left.

The simplest route follows the buildings in order. Take in the gate and walls first as a single frontage, look across to the bell tower before passing through, then walk on to the main hall. The hall runs about 27 meters across its full length, and through the 4.3-meter opening of the gate its front appears framed before the whole roof comes into view.

One practical note for map searches. In the Agency for Cultural Affairs register, only the main hall is listed at lot 1190 of Oaza Nagazoe Shiroyashiki, while the gate, walls and bell tower share lot 1148-1. The numbers differ, but all four stand in the same precinct. The address usually given for the temple itself is 1148-1.

Visiting Shogyoji Temple

Shogyoji is an active temple where services and gatherings for its members take place. It has no official website, and as of September 2026 no published opening hours or admission fee could be found. Walk the grounds quietly so as not to disturb services. If you hope to see inside the main hall, or plan to come as a group, contact the temple beforehand; the Kyushu district directory of the Otani branch lists its telephone number as 0979-22-2304.

The temple has posted no guidance on photography that we could find. Put the camera away during services or when someone is praying, and ask a member of the temple if unsure.

By public transport, the nearest bus stop is Nagazoe, about 5 minutes from the temple on foot. Nakatsu Station on the JR Nippo Line is close to 4 kilometers away by road, so a taxi is often quicker if the bus times do not suit. Parking is not publicized, so it is worth asking in advance if you plan to drive.
