Hofukuji Temple Dokubokkyo Bridge: A Gently Arched Granite Bridge of 1828
The Hofukuji Temple Dokubokkyo Bridge (寶福寺獨木橋, Hōfukuji Dokubokkyo) is a stone girder bridge of 1828 east of the Main Gate steps at Hōfukuji, a Rinzai Zen temple in Ijirino, Soja City, Okayama Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on April 28, 2009.
The bridge is 2.9 m long and 3.6 m wide, wider than it is long. It is built of granite. 3 stone girders, their upper surfaces shaped into a gentle arch, span the gap; on them, slabs 1.9 m long are laid in 2 rows to form the deck. Railing stones run along the sides, and stone posts stand at the ends.
The name Dokubokkyo literally means a bridge made of a single log, yet this one is stone. The Agency for Cultural Affairs classifies it as a civil engineering structure rather than a building, and it is the only one of Hofukuji's 24 registered structures in that category. Its registration number is 33-0219.
Why It Was Registered
The Hofukuji Temple Dokubokkyo Bridge was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency describes it as a stone bridge with a gentle camber, carefully made, with ridged railings.
The camber comes from the girders themselves. Their upper faces were cut into a bow, and the slabs laid over them follow that curve, so the whole deck rises gently. Although the bridge is short, the curve is apparent both to people crossing it and to those looking at it from the side.
The ridged finish, called shinogi after the ridge line running along a sword blade, means the top of each railing stone was cut to a peak rather than left flat. Dividing the top into 2 faces creates light and shadow along the railing. Standing just east of the Main Gate steps at the front of the temple, it was finished with care down to such details.
What to Look For
Look at the Hofukuji Temple Dokubokkyo Bridge from the side first to see the camber. At only 2.9 m long it is a short span, but the girders arch upward and the deck is slightly higher in the middle.
Then look closely at the railing stones. A ridge runs along the top, dividing a lit face from a shaded one. That is the shinogi finish, and together with the end posts it sharpens the outline of the bridge.
West of the bridge are the Main Gate steps, with the late-Meiji gate above and the late-Edo tortoise-shell stone walls and white-plastered earthen walls on either side. From near the bridge you can take in the whole layered front of the temple: bridge, steps, walls and gate.

The Hofukuji Temple Dokubokkyo Bridge is outdoors, east of the Main Gate steps.
The bridge lies east of the Main Gate steps. It is a registered cultural property, so please do not sit or stand on the railing stones, and take care in wet weather, when stone surfaces can be slippery.
The arched upper surface of the stone beams is clearest from the side rather than from the deck. No photography notices are posted in the published guides.
