Hofukuji Temple Main Gate: A Late Meiji Two-Story Gate on the Temple's Axis
The Hofukuji Temple Main Gate (寶福寺山門, Hōfukuji Sanmon) is a late-Meiji-era two-story gate at the entrance of Hōfukuji, a Rinzai Zen temple in Ijirino, Soja City, Okayama Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on April 28, 2009.
The gate stands in front of the Buddha Hall, facing east. It is a romon, a gate with an upper story, built as a single bay with a single passage. The roof is in the Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable form, covered in Sangawara-buki pantiles, and the frontage is 4.4 m. The upper story measures 3 bays by 2, with walls of horizontal boards and a pair of plank doors in the central bay of the front. On the ground level hangs a pair of paneled doors.
Hofukuji is laid out facing east. Beyond the gate stands the Buddha Hall, and on higher ground farther west rises the three-story pagoda, built in 1376, so that gate, hall and pagoda line up on a roughly east-west axis. The Hofukuji Temple Main Gate is the threshold of that line.
Why It Was Registered
The Hofukuji Temple Main Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, under number 33-0217. The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises a plain, clear design that marks the front of the Zen monastery with solemnity.
Work down from the top to see what that means. The upper story carries demitsudo bracket sets that step one stage out from the columns, with carved beam ends projecting beside them, and 2 tiers of closely set rafters under the eaves. Below, 3-bearing brackets sit on the columns, and the ceiling of the passage is a coffered Gō-tenjō grid. Instead of heaping on carving, the design relies on the orderly repetition of brackets and rafters; that is the plainness the Agency admires.
According to Soja City, Hofukuji lost most of its buildings in the Bitchu fighting of 1575 and rebuilt them step by step from the Edo period onward with the support of local lords, nearby merchants and its abbots. Dating from late Meiji, the Main Gate is among the youngest of the 24 registered structures, a late milestone in that long rebuilding.
What to Look For
Look up at the Hofukuji Temple Main Gate from the foot of its stone steps. To north and south, stone retaining walls raise the ground and white-plastered earthen walls run along the top; these are registered separately as the Main Gate Stone Walls and Earthen Walls. The horizontal lines of wall and plaster on either side, with the gate rising vertically in the middle, form a strong and complete front to the temple.
As you pass through, glance up at the coffered ceiling overhead, and at the paneled doors, framed with vertical and horizontal stiles in the manner typical of Zen temples.
Turn around once you are through to see the board walls and central doors of the upper story above the brackets and rafters. East of the stone steps lies the Dokubokkyo, a stone bridge of 1828 that completes the approach to the gate. Autumn color on the temple grounds usually peaks in mid-November.
Visiting
The Hofukuji Temple Main Gate is the entrance to the temple, and visitors pass through it freely during temple hours, 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. No admission fee is set for the grounds. The upper story is not announced as open, so it is seen from below.
The gate stands at the eastern edge of the temple, with the Dokubokkyo bridge just east of its steps. Climb the steps and pass through, and the Buddha Hall faces you, with the pagoda on higher ground behind it.
JR Soja Station is about half an hour's walk away or a short taxi ride. By car, the Okayama Soja interchange is roughly a quarter of an hour away; parking holds 75 cars, and larger vehicles use a second parking area on the west side. No photography rules are posted, but the gate is also a passageway, so do not block people coming through.
