Kosenji Temple

Kosenji Temple (弘泉寺) in Shimotsui Tanoura, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, has a main hall of 1827 and a gate of 1829 that became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on March 27, 2018 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Both were built by carpenters from the islands of the Inland Sea, and share details carved with waves, animals and plants (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Two Buildings

The main hall faces east, three bays by four with a one-bay porch under a pantiled hip-and-gable roof, and stands on a rounded granite footing set on a stone-walled platform. It was altered in 1976 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The gate, toward the east of the precincts, has a round-tiled roof, side openings on both sides and a head tie beam carved with waves along its whole length (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.
