One of the Rokusha six

The Myokyoji Rokusha Tennosha Ichitomi Tennosha Shrine (妙教寺六社天王社一富天王社, Myōkyō-ji Rokusha Tennōsha Ichitomi Tennōsha) is a one-bay shrine of 1895 facing west at the northern end of the Rokusha Tennosha, south of the Reioden at Saijo Inari Myokyoji in Takamatsu Inari, Kita Ward, Okayama City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2009/01/08. It is one of the Seventy-Seven Subsidiary Shrines; its name is read Ichitomi.

The Rokusha Tennosha, the "six Tenno shrines", are a row of six one-bay shrines of nearly identical size and form, set a little south of the Reioden buildings and running from north to south as Ichitomi, Yomori, Daigenki, Shiraito, Fukuyoshi and Fukusaki. The Agency for Cultural Affairs writes that the six, standing in an orderly line, create a solemn space.

A quiet design with nothing between the brackets

The Myokyoji Rokusha Tennosha Ichitomi Tennosha Shrine is a one-bay shrine with a nagare-style roof of cypress bark and a building area of 1.3 square metres. Its only brackets are simple three-part sets on the posts; the bays between are left empty.

The rafters are closely spaced, doubled at the front and single elsewhere, and the gables are framed with a tie beam carrying an inverted-V strut. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the design as restrained and composed.

Three of the six, Ichitomi, Yomori and Shiraito, date from 1895 and, according to the agency, match one another down to the details. The Myokyoji Rokusha Tennosha Ichitomi Tennosha Shrine sets out that shared form at the head of the row.

What to look for, and visiting

The Myokyoji Rokusha Tennosha Ichitomi Tennosha Shrine is at the northern end of the Rokusha row, a short way south of the Reioden buildings. It can be seen at any time, free of charge; the interior is not open.

From its northern end you can look down the row and see six nagare roofs running on at one height. In front of the shrine, note the empty bays between the posts and the rafters doubled only at the front. Opening hours and directions are on the Saijo Inari Myokyoji page.
