Nozaki Family Villa Taikado Main House is a timber building of 1896 in Kojima Ajino, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, entered on the national register of tangible cultural properties in 2000. It is the largest structure on the Taikado estate and faces the front garden with a formal shikidai entrance under an irimoya hipped-and-gabled roof.
Past the entrance the plan turns south, where a hall of one hundred tatami mats projects into the garden. The room takes its name from the mat count, and it states plainly why Nozaki Family Villa Taikado Main House was built: this was a place to receive guests. The great hall carries its own hipped roof, separate from the gabled roof over the entrance range.
The building covers 856 square metres. It is single-storey timber with a two-storey portion, roofed in tile. West of the hall lie the pantry and kitchen; east of it, the bath and lavatory. The service routes that kept a banquet running are written into the floor plan.

Ceremony and daily service are kept apart in space while remaining continuous in circulation.
The date matters as well. Work began in 1896 as relief employment after the First Sino-Japanese War, which makes the house a record of how a provincial fortune was turned into building work for the town.
What to Look For
Start with the mat courses in the great hall of Nozaki Family Villa Taikado Main House. A hundred mats is hard to picture from the number alone, but standing at the tokonoma and looking to the far end shows how few posts interrupt the span.
The roofs repay attention too. Seen from the garden, the gable over the entrance and the hip over the great hall overlap at different pitches. One carpenter's team built all of it, yet changed the form part by part.
The pantry on the west side faces the storehouse across a short gap. Banquet ware came out of the storehouse, was arranged in the pantry and carried through to the hall. Follow the sequence of buildings and the running order of an evening becomes legible.
Visiting
The interior of Nozaki Family Villa Taikado Main House can be entered only during the Kojima Hinameguri festival, when hina dolls are laid out in the great hall and visitors may step onto the tatami and look out at the garden. At other times the building is closed.
From outside the grounds, only a sliver of the roof is visible through the main gate. To see how the roofs stack, come on an open day and stand in the front garden, where the view from below the entrance steps reads most clearly.
