The Engine Room for Hauling Boats Ashore

The former boiler house at the West Port of Minamidaito Island, a stone building of around 1924, overlooks the port that the first settlers chose as their landing place in 1900 and that has since been developed as the island's main harbour (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

It was the engine room of the works that hauled boats onto land during typhoons, its walls built of the island's coral limestone laid as rubble (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency regards it as one of the remains that tell the story of the island's settlement.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
