Where a Cliff Builds Its Own Staircase

Step down the south-facing sea cliff at Bora, on the southeastern shore of Miyako Island, and you come upon something strange: a slope lined with hundreds of shallow pools, each rimmed by a pale, calcified lip, descending in tiers toward the surf. The largest pool spans about ten meters. The smallest measure only a few centimeters across. Some are angular, some half-moon, some almost circular. Together they form Japan's largest open-air travertine terraces — designated a National Natural Monument in October 2016 — and they are still growing.

The whole formation stretches roughly seventy meters along the shoreline and reaches a maximum width of about thirty meters. Locals once called this stretch of coast Miyadō Beach and used it as a quiet spot to dry fishing nets and gather sea urchins. The terraces themselves went largely unremarked for centuries — partly because the cliff above them is steep and roadless, partly because no one had reason to count the pools. Today the official tally exceeds three hundred.

How Miyako Made a Stone Garden

Miyako Island has no rivers. Rain — about 2,200 millimeters of it each year — disappears almost the moment it touches the ground. The reason lies in the geology. The island's surface is a sheet of Ryukyu Limestone, ten to fifty meters thick, made of Pleistocene coral reefs lifted out of the sea. Beneath that lies a much older layer called the Shimajiri Group: clay-rich mud and silt carried in from the East China coast during the Miocene and Pliocene. Water passes through the porous limestone like a sieve, then meets the clay below and runs sideways.

At Bora the two layers meet in the face of a thirty-meter cliff. Where they touch, groundwater seeps out as a spring the locals call Tidagā — the "Sun Spring." The water it delivers is loaded with dissolved calcium carbonate, picked up while filtering through the limestone above. The moment it reaches the open air, evaporation begins. Calcium precipitates as a chalky crust along the lip of every depression it passes over. Over time, these crusts grow upward into low walls that pond the water behind them, and each pond grows its own walls in turn.

Radiocarbon dating of the deposits puts the start of this process at roughly 3,600 years ago, in the late Jōmon period. Three and a half millennia later, the same chemistry is still at work. New rims thicken, water still pools, and the staircase quietly extends itself one mineral grain at a time.

Why the Designation Matters

Travertine terraces are not unknown in Japan. The Akiyoshidō cave system in Yamaguchi Prefecture preserves a famous example called the Hyakumai-zara, the "Hundred-Plate Dishes." But that formation, like nearly every other in the country, sits inside a cave, sheltered from sun, wind, and waves. Open-air examples on this scale are rare worldwide; the best-known are Pamukkale in Turkey, Jiuzhaigou in China, the Plitvice Lakes in Croatia, and the Mammoth Hot Springs at Yellowstone in the United States. Until Bora was surveyed in detail, no comparable feature had been documented along any coast in the Nansei (Ryukyu) island chain.

What allows the terraces to survive on an exposed shore is geometry. A barrier reef about two hundred meters offshore absorbs most of the wave energy before it reaches the cliff base, so the fragile rims are not battered into rubble. The combination — a perched aquifer, a precise outcrop of two contrasting rock types, a south-facing slope that evaporates spring water efficiently, and a protective reef in front — is unusual enough that the Agency for Cultural Affairs designated the site under the geological criterion of the Natural Monument category in 2016.

What to Look For

From the cliff edge above, the terraces resemble pale steps washed in seawater. Up close, the shapes become more varied. The largest, lower pools are roughly rectangular; smaller pools higher on the slope tend toward ovals and crescents. The rims themselves are subtly translucent in places — a wet, mineral skin that catches light differently from the dry limestone behind it.

The eastern edge of the formation drops thirty to eighty centimeters lower than the rest, the result of an earlier collapse of the underlying bedrock. Embedded among the terraces you can also see relict features that predate the carbonate buildup: a tidal notch cut into the cliff base, potholes worn smooth by ancient surf, and at least one massive boulder thought to have been deposited by a past tsunami. Reading these layers in sequence is like reading sentences written in three different inks on the same page.

Conditions reward patience. The pools show themselves best near low tide, when the lower terraces emerge above the waterline and the rims define themselves against the dark wet stone. After rain, the spring runs more strongly and the wet rims shine.

Getting There — Carefully

The site sits at the base of the Miyado headland, just northwest of Higashi-Henna Cape on Miyako Island's southeastern tip, about forty minutes by car from Miyako Airport. There is no formal trail. Access requires walking a narrow farm road to the cliff edge, then descending a steep, often muddy slope with the help of fixed ropes. The drop is short but genuinely hazardous: loose rock, slippery footing, no railings.

The strongly recommended option is to join a local geology or nature tour that includes the descent. Guides supply helmets, choose the right tidal window, and know the safer footholds. Visiting alone after rain or during high seas is unwise; visiting alone without prior reconnaissance is unwise at any time.

The terraces are open to the sea and unfenced. Walking on the rims is strongly discouraged — they are still growing, and a single misplaced step can crush years of calcite buildup. Photographs from the small observation point on the cliff above give an excellent overview without any disturbance to the formation.

Around the Cape

Higashi-Henna Cape, immediately east of the terraces, is itself a designated Place of Scenic Beauty. A footpath of roughly two kilometers runs out to the lighthouse at its tip, one of only sixteen lighthouses in Japan that visitors are permitted to climb. From the top, ninety-seven spiral steps up, the Pacific and the East China Sea meet at a clear visual line. In April and May the cape turns white with wild Easter lilies; year-round it offers some of the southernmost panoramic views in the country. The small Bora fishing port at the base of the cape is a calm spot to fish or watch the boats come and go. Slightly inland, the village of Bora retains the rural Miyako character that the resort beaches farther west have largely lost.
