About the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence

The Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence (大道旧山本家住宅, Daidō Kyū-Yamamoto-ke Jūtaku) is an old family estate on the Takenouchi Kaidō road in Yamada, Taishi Town, Osaka Prefecture, centred on a main house from the end of the Edo period (1830 to 1867); the main house and annex were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan in 2002 and the storehouse in 2003. Taishi Town now owns the property and opens it to the public as a municipal facility.

Three buildings are on the register. The main house and the annex were entered together on 21 August 2002 under the consecutive numbers 27-0201 and 27-0202; the storehouse followed a little over a year later, on 19 September 2003, as 27-0267. Their dates are spread across roughly a century: late Edo for the main house, 1912 for the annex and 1952 for the storehouse.

The word Daido at the front of the name means "great road", an old name for the Takenouchi Kaidō that runs past the gate. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database uses the same term, describing the estate as standing on the "Daido" that linked the port of Naniwa with Asuka.

The Takenouchi Kaidō and the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence

The Takenouchi Kaidō follows much of the route of the great road from Naniwa to the capital at Asuka that the Nihon Shoki chronicle records under the year 613. The Japan Heritage portal describes the Takenouchi Kaidō as the stretch of that ancient road running from Sakai through Kawachi, and the story "Takenouchi Kaidō and Yokoōji (Daidō)" has been recognised as Japan Heritage.

In the Edo period the road carried trade between Sakai and Yamato as well as pilgrims bound for Ise and other sacred sites. According to Biken Sekkei, the architects who designed the restoration of the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence, inns and teahouses once lined this part of the route. Old signposts and Ise lanterns still stand nearby. The Osaka Convention and Tourism Bureau places the house at the foot of the Mochiya Bridge in Yamada.

Published sources say little about the Yamamoto family's trade or the history of the estate. After it passed to Taishi Town the house was repaired and opened to visitors in September 2004. The town explains that recent alterations were stripped out and a sashigamoi beam in the earth-floored room, which had been reused elsewhere, was put back, so that the buildings returned to their earlier form without heavy-handed changes.

Layout of the Estate and How to Walk It

The main house of the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence sits near the centre of the plot and faces northwest toward the road. The annex lies on that same northwest side, in front of the main house, and is linked to it by a covered corridor across the garden. The storehouse stands east of the main house with its ridge running east to west. Taishi Town notes that two more rice storehouses once stood with it around an open yard.

Start on the road. The Yamatomune roof, a thatched gable flanked by tiled sections, reads best from outside before you step through the gate. Inside, go from the earth-floored entrance of the main house up into the tatami rooms, follow the corridor to the reception room in the annex, and finish by walking round to the east side to see the two-storey storehouse.

Each building's structure and details are covered on its own page.

Visiting the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence

Taishi Town's page, updated on 10 August 2026, says the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence is temporarily closed because of an equipment fault, and that the reopening date will be announced once it is set. Before travelling, check the town page or call the Lifelong Learning Section of the Taishi Town Board of Education on 0721-98-5534.

In normal times the house opens on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, closing for the New Year period from 28 December to 4 January. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a break from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Admission is 100 yen for visitors aged 18 and over; holders of disability certificates and one companion enter free on showing the certificate at reception. The house stays shut all day if a heavy rain emergency warning or storm warning is in force at 7:00 a.m.

Special openings are held in spring and autumn, and events sometimes give access to the interiors. On open days the tatami rooms of the main house and the annex can be rented through the same section. No official guidance on photography could be found, so ask at reception before photographing inside.

By public transport, take the Kintetsu Minami-Osaka Line to Kaminotaishi Station. Osaka Prefecture gives the distance from the station as about 2.7 kilometres, roughly a 30-minute walk. A Taishi Town community bus also runs from Kaminotaishi Station; the route map and timetable are on the Taishi Town Tourism Association site. Drivers will find the house about 3 minutes on foot from the Chikatsu Asuka no Sato Taishi roadside station.
