About the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Annex

The Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Annex (大道旧山本家住宅離れ, Daidō Kyū-Yamamoto-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is a reception wing built in 1912 on the Yamamoto estate in Yamada, Taishi Town, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on 21 August 2002. It carries registration number 27-0202 and was entered on the same day as the main house.

The year comes from a Munafuda, the ridge tablet placed at the building's raising. The annex is a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 52 square metres, with a connecting corridor. It stands in front of the main house on the northwest side, toward the Takenouchi Kaidō, and is joined to it by that corridor across the garden.

An Eight-Mat Shoin Reception Room

The roof is Irimoya-zukuri, a hip-and-gable form, with Hisashi eaves running round all four sides and Sangawara-buki pan tiles. Next to the thatch-and-tile gable of the main house, the annex differs in both shape and roofing material.

At its heart is an eight-mat Zashiki reception room fitted with a Tokonoma alcove, display shelves and a Tsukeshoin writing bay. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as small in scale but carefully made Shoin-zukuri. Having all three of alcove, shelves and writing bay is the full set that marks a room as a formal space for receiving guests.

Why the Annex Was Registered

The Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Annex was registered as a model of form and design. The main house and the storehouse on the same estate were registered instead for their contribution to the historic landscape, so the annex is the one building here valued above all for how it is designed.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the hip-and-gable roof with eaves on four sides and the careful finish of the eight-mat room with its alcove, shelves and writing bay.

What to Look For at the Annex

From the garden you can follow the corridor that runs between the main house and the Yamamoto annex. The same spot lets you compare the two roofs side by side: thatched yamatomune on one hand, tiled hip-and-gable on the other.

In the reception room, notice how the alcove, the shelves and the writing bay are fitted into a space of only eight mats. Their arrangement explains why the room is described as carefully made.

Visiting the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Annex

On opening days visitors can see the reception room of the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Annex, and the room is also let as rental space. There is no official guidance on photography, so ask at reception. Taishi Town's notice of August 2026 says the house is shut for the time being while an equipment fault is dealt with; check opening days and directions on the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence page.
