About the Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse
The Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse (山本家住宅東蔵, Yamamoto-ke Jūtaku Higashigura) is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri earthen-walled storehouse built in 1914 in Taishi, Taishi Town, Osaka Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 12, 2001. It has a tiled roof and a footprint of 34 square meters.
It stands east of the main house and, like the house, faces the Takenouchi Kaidō highway that runs past the gates of Eifukuji. Of the homestead's two storehouses, this is the one that shows itself to the road.
A Storehouse with a Tatami Room
The Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse was not built for storage alone. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the interior is divided into two rooms, east and west, and the west room is a kura-zashiki: a tatami room fitted out inside the thick fireproof walls of a storehouse, where valuables could be kept close and guests received in a quiet, protected space.
The exterior reflects that use. Lean-to Hisashi roofs project on the south and west sides, and under the southern one runs a nure-en, an open veranda outside the shutters. The storehouse turns a closed wall to the street on the north and opens its south side toward the interior of the plot.
The west room is the one nearer the main house, so the tatami room sits on the side that connects to the family's living quarters.
Why It Was Registered
The storehouse was registered as contributing to the historic landscape. The Agency notes that it joins the main house through a wooden side gate and that the pair give this stretch of road the varied townhouse scenery typical of highway settlements in Kawachi, the old province of eastern Osaka.
Seen from the highway, the compact two-storey white storehouse sits beside the long main house, and the side gate marks the shift between them. Walking in from the east, the storehouse comes into view first, then the great roof of the main house.
Visiting the Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse
The interior of the Yamamoto Family Residence East Storehouse, including the tatami room, is not open, and no public opening has been announced. View it from the Takenouchi Kaidō and photograph only from the public road, without standing in front of the side gate.
The veranda and lean-to on the south side face into the plot and cannot be seen from the street. What you can see is the north wall and the side gate area between the storehouse and the main house.
