About the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Storehouse

The Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Storehouse (大道旧山本家住宅蔵, Daidō Kyū-Yamamoto-ke Jūtaku Kura) is a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse built in 1952 on the Yamamoto estate in Yamada, Taishi Town, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on 19 September 2003. Its registration number is 27-0267; it joined the register in the 38th round, a little over a year after the main house and annex.

It is a Dozo-zukuri building of two storeys with a tiled roof and a building area of 37 square metres. It stands to the east of the yamatomune main house in the middle of the estate, with its ridge running east to west.

Board Skirting and Projecting Drip Tiles

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the storehouse as 5 bays long and 2 bays deep, under a Kirizuma-zukuri gable roof of Sangawara-buki pan tiles, with its entrance on the long side in the Hirairi manner.

The lower walls are clad in timber Koshiita boarding, and the upper walls are finished in white Shikkui lime plaster. Running right round the plastered walls is a band of large Mizukiri-gawara drip tiles held out on Mochiokuri brackets, which the Agency picks out as the building's defining feature. Drip tiles throw rainwater clear of the earthen wall below, so the protective details, boards below and tiles above, are what give the storehouse its look.

A Rebuilt Storehouse and the Lost Rice Stores

Taishi Town explains that the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Storehouse was rebuilt in 1952, and that two more rice storehouses originally stood with it around an open yard. The rice stores have not survived, so this is the only storehouse left on the estate.

Although it went up in the years just after the Second World War, it follows the traditional specification of earthen walls, lime plaster and drip tiles. Like the main house, it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, as one of the buildings that make up the estate on the Takenouchi Kaidō.

What to Look For at the Storehouse

Step back from the front and follow the line of drip tiles that divides the wall into upper and lower zones. The row of brackets beneath carries the weight of the projecting tiles. Read together with the height of the tile band, the change from boarding to plaster makes the logic of the wall easy to see.

The ground in front of the Yamamoto storehouse is the yard the rice stores once enclosed. Standing in this corner east of the main house, you can picture the estate when three storehouses stood here.

Visiting the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Storehouse

The exterior of the Daido Former Yamamoto Family Residence Storehouse can be seen from inside the estate on opening days.
