What Is the Ebara Family Residence Nagayamon Gate?
The Ebara Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (榎原家住宅長屋門, Ebara-ke Jūtaku Nagayamon) is a late Edo-period (1830–1867) gatehouse in Toyotsu-cho, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, altered in the early Meiji years and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 9 June 2004. It faces the street along the east side of the Ebara estate and forms its front.
It is a tiled timber building with a building area of 42 square metres. The gateway occupies the southern half and living quarters the northern half. A Nagayamon combines a gate and a row of rooms under one roof; such rooms typically housed gatekeepers or servants, or served as workspaces.
Why the Gate Was Registered
The Ebara Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a plain building but the central element of the estate's street front.
That front is more than the gate. The former rice storehouse adjoins its southern end and the east storehouse its northern end, so from the street the three read as a single wall with the gate at its centre.
The gate is the older partner. It dates from the late Edo period, like the main house, while both storehouses beside it were built in the Meiji era, so the storehouses grew up around a gate that was already there.
What to Look For
The first thing to notice on the Ebara nagayamon is the roof. Over the gateway it drops one step below the roof of the living quarters, and its eaves are pushed well forward. The break in the long roofline, and the shadow under the deeper eaves, mark the entrance from some distance away.
At the gateway stand a pair of Kagami-bashira, the main gateposts, with a Kabuki crossbeam laid across them. There is little ornament, but the heavy posts and beam give the gate its standing.
Beyond the living quarters is the east storehouse, which the Agency notes was kept low so that it continues the line of the gate. Compare the height of the gate roof with the eaves of the storehouse as you look along the street.
Visiting the Ebara Family Residence Nagayamon Gate
The Ebara Family Residence Nagayamon Gate belongs to a private home. You cannot pass through it into the grounds, and the living quarters are not open.
Because the gate faces the east street, its exterior can be seen from the public road. The stepped roof and deep eaves are easiest to read from a little way off, at an angle. Please photograph only from the road and do not stand in the gateway.
