What Is the Ebara Family Residence East Storehouse?
The Ebara Family Residence East Storehouse (榎原家住宅東土蔵, Ebara-ke Jūtaku Higashi Dozō) is a two-storey storehouse built in 1874 in Toyotsu-cho, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 9 June 2004. It stands at the north-east corner of the Ebara estate, east of the main house, abutting the northern end of the gatehouse that faces the street.
It is built in the Dozo-zukuri manner, with thick fire-resistant earthen walls, under a roof of interlocking round and flat tiles, and has a building area of 28 square metres. Of the storehouses on the estate with a firm date, it is the oldest.
Why the East Storehouse Was Registered
The Ebara Family Residence East Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. What the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out is its low build, which makes it read as a continuation of the gatehouse.
It has two storeys, but it does not tower. The line of the gate roof runs on into the storehouse eaves without a sharp jump, so the storehouse and gate together give the estate an even front along the street.
What to Look For
The base of the wall is faced in stone, protecting the part most exposed to rain splash and mud, and making a clear line against the white plaster above.
Under the eaves runs a small Nokijabara, a moulded plaster cornice, and the east wall, the side facing the street, has a row of small windows.
The Agency's description also takes us inside. The floor beams of the upper storey are set low, and on the upper floor strongly curved beams arch overhead to win back headroom. Having kept the outside low, the builders used the curve of the timber to keep the upper floor usable.
Compare the west storehouse at the far corner of the estate, which is built to look tall. Two storehouses of the same kind, shaped quite differently according to where they stand.
Visiting the Ebara Family Residence East Storehouse
The Ebara Family Residence East Storehouse is part of a private home; its interior is closed and the grounds cannot be entered.
Because it stands along the east street at the end of the gatehouse, its exterior can be seen from the public road together with the gate. Look for the stone base and the row of small windows on the street side.
