A 1926 Bathhouse Facing the Old Kyōshigoe Highway

The Former Asahi-yu (旧朝日湯, Kyū Asahi-yu) is a single-storey wooden bathhouse built in 1926 in the Motomachi district of Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture, and it entered Japan's national register of Tangible Cultural Properties on 15 August 2024. The building faces south onto the Kyōshigoe Kaidō, one of the old land routes running down the Osaka coast toward the pass into Kii Province, and it sits about ten minutes' walk northwest of Izumisano Station.

Japanese bathhouse plans follow a strict sequence, and this one preserves it. The sentō begins with the changing room, which here occupies a hall roofed in katairimoya form, hipped on one side and gabled on the other, laid with pantiles. The entrance is set in the long side, under an eaves canopy that lifts at the centre to mark the door. Behind, to the north, stand two bath halls, each gabled and entered on the gable end. Behind those again is the boiler room, its floor left as bare earth, where the water was heated.

Two bath halls, because bathhouses were divided by sex. The west hall served women. Its granite tub still occupies the centre of the floor, and above it the ceiling opens into a barrel vault, the half-cylinder of plaster that Japanese builders of the 1920s borrowed from Western church and station architecture and used to give a modest neighbourhood facility an air of occasion. The Agency for Cultural Affairs record calls the result lavish, and describes the building as a blend of Japanese and Western manners.

The structure covers 213 square metres. Neither designer nor builder is recorded. A bathhouse called Asahi-yu is said to have operated on the site from the Meiji period, with the present timber fabric dating substantially from the 1920s; the architectural historian Yoshida Kōichi records that business ended after the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake of 1995.

Registration in 2024, and What It Recognises

The Council for Cultural Affairs recommended the building in March 2024, and registration took effect with publication in the Official Gazette that August. It carries registration number 27-0913 and belongs to the 107th round. The criterion applied was "a model of design", the ground reserved for buildings whose composition sets a standard rather than merely contributing to a townscape. Registration brought the number of registered properties in Izumisano to eight.

Understanding what this status means matters. A Registered Tangible Cultural Property is not a designated Important Cultural Property. Registration was introduced in 1996 as a lighter instrument aimed at privately held buildings that remain in daily use: the owner notifies the authorities before substantial alteration and gains tax relief and technical support, and the building keeps working. Applying it to a defunct bathhouse in a provincial town is exactly the use the system was built for.

What the register recognises here is completeness. Public bathhouses were once ordinary infrastructure, present in every neighbourhood, and precisely because they were ordinary they were replaced without ceremony. Very few survive with the full sequence intact: changing hall, paired bath halls, boiler room, all in their original relationship. The granite tub and the vaulted plaster ceiling raise the case further, since they show a small-town operator spending money on architectural effect at a moment when the sentō was competing for custom against the first domestic bathrooms.

Reused as an Office and a Screening Room

The Former Asahi-yu holds an unusual position among registered buildings, because a municipal government department works inside it. An interior refurbishment completed in October 2022 divided the building between two functions. The east hall, formerly the men's bath, became the office of the Cultural Property Protection Division of the Izumisano City Board of Education, which moved in that November. The west hall, formerly the women's bath, became a rentable space fitted with a large-screen projection setup and now operates as COZY ROOM "ASAHI" Yū, run by the local development organisation Value Renovations Sano. Watching a film beneath a 1926 barrel vault, from a floor where the granite tub remains, is a specific experience that no purpose-built cinema offers.

For visitors this arrangement has practical consequences. The building is a working office, not a museum, so there is no ticket desk and no fixed tour. The Cultural Property Protection Division keeps standard municipal hours, roughly 8:45 to 17:15 on weekdays, and closes on weekends and public holidays. Anyone wanting to see the interior should telephone the division in advance and arrange a time. The exterior, including the raised eaves over the entrance and the tiled roofs of the two bath halls, can be seen from the street without any arrangement.

The rentable west hall is booked through Value Renovations Sano rather than the city, so enquiries about using that space go to a different number. Availability depends on bookings already made.

One further note for anyone planning a route. Izumisano retains a second registered former bathhouse, the Taishōgun-yu, a short walk away, and the Izumisano Furusato Machiya-kan, a preserved merchant house, stands nearby as well. The city has run a bathhouse-themed stamp trail linking these buildings to its working public baths and hot springs, which is a reasonable framework for a half-day on foot. Note that the register lists the property under the land parcel number Motomachi 4535-1 while the office uses the street address Motomachi 4-5; the two refer to the same building.
