What Is the Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse?

The Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse (旧井上家住宅裏米蔵) is a late Edo-period rice storehouse on a village headman's estate in Kusaka, Higashiosaka City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 August 2024.

It stands east of the North Storehouse, facing south. "Rear" marks it as the rice store at the back of the estate, as opposed to the Front Rice Storehouse in the southeast corner. The Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse covers 21 square meters, dates from the late Edo period, between 1830 and 1868, and was altered around 1965.

A Rice Store on the North Side

The Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse is registration number 27-0921, entered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes how it and the North Storehouse, standing side by side, shape the view of the estate from the north.

The estate keeps two rice stores, front and rear. The Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse is the one set deep inside the property, between the storehouses to the northwest and the North Barn to its east.

Round-Tile Roof and a Copper-Clad Wall

The Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse has two storeys, a Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof and its door on the long side. The roof is an Okiyane set above the earthen body. Where every other storehouse on the estate uses simplified Sangawara-buki pantiles, this one alone is roofed in Hongawarabuki, with alternating flat and round tiles.

The door is at the east end of the south face, under a small canopy roofed in sheet iron. The walls are plastered in Shikkui, except the north wall, which is covered in copper sheeting. That is the face turned toward the outside of the estate.

Inside, each floor is a single board-floored room. The roof is framed with a double tier of beams, and a post on the upper beam carries the ridge.

Visiting the Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse

The Former Inoue Family Residence, including the Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse, is not open to the public, and the grounds cannot be entered.

The Former Inoue Family Residence Rear Rice Storehouse is on the north side of the estate, where it and the North Storehouse form the northern view of the property.
