The Fujimoto Family Residence Back Gate

The Fujimoto Family Residence Back Gate (藤本家住宅裏門, Fujimoto-ke Jūtaku Uramon) is an early Meiji-period gate in Fujiidera City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 18, 2006. It stands toward the eastern end of the estate's south side, squeezed between the east barn and the south rice storehouse.

It measures 2 by 1 Ken bays, with the ridge running east to west, under a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) pantile roof (Sangawara-buki). The registered opening is 2 metres wide. The walls combine vertical board wainscoting with white lime plaster (Shikkui) above, and the doorway is on the western side.

Why It Was Registered

The Fujimoto Family Residence Back Gate was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as the entrance to the work yard and as one of the pieces that give the south side of the estate its tidy street front.

Where the front gate on the west side leads guests toward the main entrance, this gate led to the working half of the property. The east barn is left open along its yard side, and the south rice storehouse has two doorways facing west into the same yard. Step through here and you were among the barns and storehouses, not the reception rooms.

What to Look For

Compare it with the front gate. That one is 2 and a half by 1 and a half bays with black plaster; the Fujimoto Family Residence Back Gate is a size smaller at 2 by 1 bays and finished in white. Each gate also turns its ridge to suit its street, north to south on the west side and east to west here.

The board wainscoting runs on without a break into the south wall of the east barn and the gable end of the south rice storehouse. The Agency notes that the storehouse's gable was given the same boarding to match the fences, and the back gate sits in the middle of that matched run.

Visiting the Fujimoto Family Residence Back Gate

The Fujimoto Family Residence Back Gate belongs to a private home and cannot be entered. The south side of the estate borders a public road, so the exterior can be seen from there.

The gate is still a working entrance, so look from a few steps away rather than standing in front of it. From the west-side lane, walk to the southwest corner of the estate and turn east. Directions from the station are on the Fujimoto Family Residence page.
