Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo: A Prewar Factory Compound in Osaka

Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo (久金属工業, Hisa Kinzoku Kōgyō) is the head-office factory of a bottle-cap and can manufacturer in Kitatsumori, Nishinari Ward, Osaka City, where nine structures built between 1934 and 1937 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 4, 2021.

The name means Hisa Metal Industries. Hisa is the family name of the founder, Hisa Shojiro, and it is read hisa, not kyū, even though the character 久 often means old or long-lasting.

The compound sits among warehouses and workshops on the Kizu River, and the registered buildings are still in daily use by the company. Factory buildings of this age are usually torn down once they wear out. At Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo, the buildings put up in the year of the move and the additions of about 1937 survive together, which is why they were registered as a set rather than one at a time.

From a One-Man Workshop to a Cap Maker

The company history begins in April 1915, when Hisa Shojiro opened a small workshop in Sakuragawa, Naniwa Ward, making metal containers for export and caps for glass bottles. The business moved to Minami-Horie in Nishi Ward in 1919 and added a second factory in Naniwa Ward in 1925.

1934 was the turning point. In January the firm became a partnership, and in July it moved to its present site in Kitatsumori. A photograph from these years in the company archive shows its first powered press. According to Osaka Cultural Properties Navi, a database kept by Osaka architects' and heritage groups, powered presses cut production costs sharply and let the firm dominate the market for candy-jar lids.

In July 1944 four affiliated companies merged to form Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd. After the war the company claims several firsts in Japan, including aluminum-foil cap seals in 1953 and flip-off caps for pharmaceutical vials in 1971. The Kitatsumori site came through the Muroto Typhoon of September 1934, which struck two months after the move, as well as wartime air raids, and has been repaired and extended many times since.

Nine Registered Structures and How the Site Fits Together

The nine registered structures at Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo are the office, the main gate, the guard room, the technical office, the former president's office, the quality control office, the former warehouse, the former first factory and the former air raid shelter. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the technical office, first factory, warehouse and shelter to around 1934, and the office, president's office, quality control office, guard room and gate to around 1937. All nine were registered for contributing to the historic landscape.

The Agency's notes give a rough plan. The main gate stands near the middle of the street frontage on the south side, with the office on its west and the warehouse on its east. Directly inside the gate is a landscaped mound, and the old shelter hides behind it.

On the north side of the site, beside the east gate, stands the technical office. The east gate was the original main entrance, and the guard room still stands just inside it. The former president's office and the quality control office continue in a line to the south of the technical office, and the first factory occupies the southeast corner. A copper plate bearing the company's 1934 name is still fixed beside the east gate.

The buildings that face the street, the office and the gate, carry tile cladding and textured concrete. Those inside the compound are mostly finished in clapboard or sheet iron, and the south faces of the quality control office and the warehouse share the same clapboard and small window canopies. One oddity: the Agency's note on the office calls its street side the north face, which does not square with the gate being on the south.

Recognition by the City of Osaka

Osaka City listed the head office of Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo as an urban landscape resource in March 2018. In fiscal 2019 the city's streetscape subsidy paid for work on the office exterior. The city's case study praises the compound as a working factory whose buildings, including large open-span workshops, have been kept in use rather than replaced, and calls it important for understanding how industry shaped modern Osaka.

In 2023 the head office was chosen for the Living Architecture Museum Osaka Selection. The citation compares the whole site to a film set of prewar wooden factories and points out that prewar press machines and other machine tools are still kept on the premises.

Visiting Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo

Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo is a working factory, and the registered buildings are in use, so the compound is closed to the public on ordinary days. The interiors can be seen only when the company takes part in a public open-house event.

Since 2021 the company has joined Open House Osaka (Ikenchiku Museum Festival Osaka, known locally as Ikefes). In 2024 it offered two 45-minute guided tours on October 26, each limited to 15 people chosen by advance lottery. The listing warned of steep stairs and noted that photography is not allowed in parts of the interiors. Osaka Cultural Properties Navi describes the buildings as open about once a year.

Open House Osaka 2026 runs on October 24 and 25, with the full program due on September 25. Check the festival website to see whether Hisa Kinzoku Kogyo is taking part this year.

The nearest station is Kizugawa on the Nankai Koya Line branch known as the Shiomibashi Line, roughly a 6-minute walk away. Trains on this short branch are infrequent, so check the timetable first. Outside open-house days you can only look at the street front, so keep clear of vehicles and staff entering the gates.
