What Is Homyoji Temple Yakuimon Gate?
Homyoji Temple Yakuimon Gate (法明寺薬医門, Hōmyō-ji Yakuimon) is the front gate of Homyoji, a Jodo Shu (Pure Land) Buddhist temple in Fukae-minami, Higashinari Ward, Osaka City; built in 1795 as a Yakuimon-style gate, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Building) of Japan on August 7, 2023. It is a timber gate with a tiled roof and an opening 2.8 meters wide.
The gate opens on the south side of the grounds. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, it stands at the end of an approach path drawn in from the Kuragari-goe Nara Kaidō, the old highway linking Osaka and Nara. It is the first building visitors pass through, with the Main Hall in view straight ahead. The Agency records repairs in 1912 and 2002.
Why Homyoji Temple Yakuimon Gate Was Registered
Homyoji Temple Yakuimon Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency notes that, though small, it has well-finished carved scrolls and moldings and a known construction date, and that it helps shape the historic scene of the old Fukae village and the highway running past it.
The layout says as much as the carving. A path leading off the highway to a proper gate is the classic arrangement of a roadside village temple, and the 2.8-meter gate, set at the end of that path, still tells passers-by where the temple entrance is.
How the Yakuimon Gate Is Built
A yakuimon has two main posts that carry the doors, with a pair of rear support posts (Hikaebashira) behind them, all under a single roof. Such gates usually have a simple gable roof, but Homyoji Temple Yakuimon Gate has a hip-and-gable roof (Irimoya-zukuri) of round-and-flat tiles (Hongawarabuki), with the ridge running east to west, according to Osaka Cultural Properties Navi. Seen from the approach path, the roof wraps around its ends and gives the little gate more weight than a plain gable would.
Step under the roof and look up. The ceiling is a coffered grid (Gō-tenjō) of square timber frames. Three lines of beams span the gate, and a horizontal tie beam called a mizuhiki koryo links each main post to its rear post. For a gate this small, the ceiling is finished with real care.
The carved scroll patterns and shaped moldings on the timbers are the details the Agency singles out as well finished. Approach from the rear-post side to see the carving up close.
Visiting Homyoji Temple Yakuimon Gate
Homyoji Temple Yakuimon Gate faces the approach path, and its outside can be seen from there. If you step underneath to see the ceiling, keep to one side so you do not block the way, and give priority to people attending services or visiting graves. For a photograph of the whole front, stand a little way back along the path.
When the doors are closed, view the gate from outside and do not enter the grounds. Directions and visiting conditions for the temple as a whole are on the Homyoji Temple page.
