What Is the Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence Nagayamon Gate?
The Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (井上良尚家住宅長屋門, Inoue Yoshinao-ke Jūtaku Nagayamon) is a late Edo-period gatehouse at the front of the Inoue family estate in Ayazono, Takaishi City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 26 September 2000. It is a single-storey timber building with a floor area of 34 square meters.
A Nagayamon is a gate built into a long, low range of rooms, which usually housed servants or stores. This one stands south of the main house, so it is the first building anyone entering the estate passes through.
A Closed Front and an Open Back
The Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence Nagayamon Gate carries a hipped-and-gabled Irimoya-zukuri roof laid in Hongawarabuki, the heavy round-and-flat tiling that signals status. Its outer walls combine grey-tinted nezumi plaster with Shinkabe panels, where the posts stay visible in the wall face. At the front left is a projecting latticed window, a Degōshi.
The passage runs through the middle, closed by board doors that swing inward. The rooms on either side have no doors to the street; their entrances open on the back, into the estate. From outside you see only plastered wall and a lattice window, while all the daily coming and going happens on the inner side.
That rear face is built in the Degeta-zukuri manner, with brackets pushing the eave beam out beyond the posts, and a Hisashi canopy runs along it. The deep eave gives shelter to the courtyard side. One building, in other words, does two jobs: a hard shell toward the road and a sheltered working front toward the house.
The Face of a Headman's Estate
The Osaka Cultural Properties Navi describes the Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence Nagayamon Gate as tall enough to ride through on horseback, and Takaishi City lists its long frontage among the features that give the estate its rank.
It was registered under number 27-0101 for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it the core of the local streetscape, the formal front of a house whose heads served as Shōya, or village headman, for generations.
