What Is the Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence Storehouse?
The Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence Storehouse (井上良尚家住宅蔵, Inoue Yoshinao-ke Jūtaku Kura) is a late Edo-period earthen-walled storehouse on the Inoue family estate in Ayazono, Takaishi City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 26 September 2000. It is a single-storey Dozo-zukuri building with a floor area of 43 square meters.
It stands west of the main house, roughly midway along the northwest edge of the lot. The Agency for Cultural Affairs identifies it as a dōgugura, a utensil store where the household kept its tableware, furnishings and other occasional-use goods.
Boards to the Street, Plaster to the House
The Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence Storehouse has a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof in Hongawarabuki tiling. What catches the eye is how the walls are finished. The northwest face, which fronts the street, is clad in tall vertical boards that run on seamlessly from the adjoining boundary wall. The other three faces are left in white Shikkui plaster.
Boarding the street side protects the earthen wall from weather and knocks, and it makes wall and storehouse read as one long timber screen around the estate. Seen from inside the grounds, though, the building looks like a classic white-walled kura. The building changes character depending on which side you see it from.
The door is on the east face, toward the main house. There is no access from the street; the storehouse was used only from within the estate.
A Mezzanine and High Vents
Inside, a mezzanine floor divides the tall interior, adding a second level of storage. For a room full of utensils of every size, this was a practical way to keep things in order.
High in the walls are small windows that let air move through, an important safeguard in a thick-walled store where damp can build up and damage the stored utensils. The agency sums it up as a storehouse shaped by its purpose.
It was registered under number 27-0102 as a building that would be difficult to reproduce. At the Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence, only this storehouse and the oil storehouse were registered on that basis.

The Inoue Yoshinao Family Residence Storehouse is part of a private home, and its interior is not open to the public.
Its board-clad northwest wall, continuous with the boundary wall, faces the street and can be seen from the road. The plastered faces and the east door look inward and are hidden from outside. Please stay on the public street.
