What the Gatehouse Is
The Iwane Family Residence Gatehouse (岩根家住宅門屋, Iwane-ke Jūtaku Monya) in Gokenya 2-chome, Tondabayashi City, Osaka Prefecture, is a Nagayamon-type gate building of the early Taisho period (1912 to 1918), registered as a Tangible Cultural Property on November 17, 2015. It combines an earthen-walled storehouse section with a timber section under one gabled tile roof, and covers 118 square meters.
It stands at the southern end of the estate's east side, its ridge running north to south. Tondabayashi City notes that the gate opens to the east, and this is the formal way into the grounds.
The two halves on either side of the gate were built for completely different purposes, and that contrast is the thing to look at.
A Rice Store and a Sitting Room
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Iwane Family Residence Gatehouse holds a rice storehouse south of the gate and a sitting room called 松寿亭, a name built from the characters for pine and long life, to the north.
The rice store is built in the Dozo-zukuri manner, its walls sealed in Shikkui plaster with vertical boarding along the lower part. It is a closed, defensive wall, meant to keep fire and damp away from the grain.
The sitting room is lighter. Its posts are left exposed in the wall face (Shinkabe), the lower wall is clad in horizontal boards held by notched battens (Shitami-itabari), and inside is a 6-mat room with an alcove and a built-in writing desk (Tsukeshoin). A room fit for guests sits inside the gate itself.
White sealed plaster on one side of the gate, timber posts and boards on the other, all under one roof.
Part of the Street Front
The Agency writes that the Iwane Family Residence Gatehouse and the south storehouse together give the estate a dignified street front. The gatehouse stands near the southeast corner, and the long wall of the south storehouse runs along the road to the south, so the two meet across the corner.
It is register no. 27-0640, registered under the historic landscape criterion. The early Taisho date range given for it is the same as for the south storehouse and the kangobei fence.
Seeing the Gatehouse
The Iwane Family Residence Gatehouse is one of the easiest buildings on the estate to see. From the road on the east side you can take in the gate, the white wall of the rice store and the boarded wall of the sitting room. You cannot go through the gate, and the 6-mat room is not open.
The gate is still the family's front entrance. Please look from the far side of the road rather than stopping in the gateway. Directions from the nearest station are on the Iwane Family Residence group page.
