What the Inner Room Is
The Iwane Family Residence Inner Room (岩根家住宅奥座敷, Iwane-ke Jūtaku Okuzashiki) in Gokenya 2-chome, Tondabayashi City, Osaka Prefecture, is a single-storey timber drawing-room wing built in the early Taisho period (1912 to 1925) and registered as a Tangible Cultural Property on April 18, 2008. It covers 88 square meters.
The wing is attached to the west side of the main house. Its roof combines hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) and plain gable (Kirizuma-zukuri) sections, laid in pantiles. Inside are two rooms in sequence, a 15-mat main room and a 10-mat antechamber, with corridors on the south and north.
The main house was where the family lived and worked. The okuzashiki, literally the inner parlor, was built to receive guests.
A Formal Shoin Suite
The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the 15-mat room of the Iwane Family Residence Inner Room has well-made formal display fittings and opens onto an inner garden. The carved transoms (Ranma) and other joinery are carefully finished, and the Agency treats the wing as a good example of modern Japanese-style architecture. It is register no. 27-0463, registered under the historic landscape criterion.
Tondabayashi City describes an alcove with shelves, high ceilings and a generous, relaxed Shoin-zukuri character. Slide the partitions away and the two rooms become one hall of 25 mats.
Building a separate reception wing in the early Taisho years, when the brewery was prospering, says something about how often the family now had guests to entertain.
Tied to the Main House
Adding the Iwane Family Residence Inner Room changed the main house as well. According to the city, the second floor of the main house was rebuilt at about the same time with a pantiled hip-and-gable roof, so that the old farmhouse and the new drawing rooms share one roofscape.
To the north stands the large sake brewery. The Agency locates the brewery as north of the okuzashiki, which puts this guest wing between the family's house and its place of work.
Seeing the Inner Room
The Iwane Family Residence Inner Room sits deep inside the compound, west of the main house and facing an inner garden, and cannot be seen from the public road. The interior is not open, so the alcove and the carved transoms are not on view.
How to reach the estate and what can be seen there are covered on the Iwane Family Residence group page.
