A Lecture Hall from an Imperial Banquet Hall
The Kanshinji Temple Onshi Lecture Hall (観心寺恩賜講堂) is a lecture hall of 1930 in Teramoto, Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on July 31, 2017 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a timber building with a building area of 458.44 square metres, a lavatory at the back and a slate roof; designation number 02666.
Timber from the Enthronement Banquet Hall
The Kanshinji Temple Onshi Lecture Hall was built in the temple grounds in 1930 from materials granted by the Imperial Household Ministry from the great banquet hall it had put up in the Kyoto Imperial Garden for the enthronement of Emperor Showa in 1928 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It was designed by an Osaka architect.
Inside is one spacious hall, richly decorated with the granted materials: a double coved coffered ceiling painted with court patterns, chandeliers, ornamental metalwork, textiles and wallpaper (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Is an Important Cultural Property
The Agency says the hall carries over both the splendour of the banquet hall and the many devices used to build it quickly and efficiently, recomposed as a lecture hall, and that it is of high value for understanding the development of modern imperial architecture.
