What Is the Koyama Family Residence Gatehouse?
The Koyama Family Residence Gatehouse (兒山家住宅門長屋, Koyama-ke Jūtaku Mon-nagaya) is the long gate building at the front of a wealthy farming family's estate in Tokikita, Naka Ward, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture; it was built in the late Edo period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 14 February 2002. It is a single-storey timber building of 112 square meters, second in size only to the main house.
It stretches east to west across the front of the estate, a little west of center, with the gate opening roughly in the middle. The rooms on either side of the gate are now used as storage barns.
Black Plaster and White
The Koyama Family Residence Gatehouse has a hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) roof in Hongawarabuki tiles. Its street front is finished in black plaster and the other sides in white, all above a Tateita-bari skirting of vertical boards.
The black front gives the face seen by arriving visitors a sharp, formal edge, while the sides and the courtyard face stay bright. Black plaster is laborious to apply, and here it is used only where it would be seen.
A row of horizontal Renji-mado lattice windows runs along the front. Repeated across the length of the building, they draw a band either side of the gate.
The Face of the Estate
A long building with rooms flanking a central gate is called a Nagayamon. The Koyama Family Residence Gatehouse takes this form, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as the centerpiece of the estate's front.
Nagayamon gates were typical of the leading families in a village. For a family that served as ōjōya, the headmen over several villages, the gatehouse was the building that announced its standing to the outside world. It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
The main house stands beyond the gate facing south, and its layered roofs rise above the gatehouse roof.
Visiting the Koyama Family Residence Gatehouse
The Koyama Family Residence Gatehouse is the gate to a private home. The grounds and the rooms of the gatehouse are closed, and visitors may not pass through the gate.
As the front of the estate, the Koyama Family Residence Gatehouse is the building most easily seen from outside: its black plaster and lattice windows face the public road. Please keep clear of the gateway so as not to block the residents, and view it quietly from the road.
