What Is the Koyama Family Residence Reception Wing?
The Koyama Family Residence Reception Wing (兒山家住宅座敷, Koyama-ke Jūtaku Zashiki) is the guest wing attached to the east side of the main house on a wealthy farming family's estate in Tokikita, Naka Ward, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture; it was built in the late Edo period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 14 February 2002. It is a single-storey timber building of 89 square meters.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Koyama Family Residence Reception Wing as a model of design. Only three of the estate's ten buildings were registered on that basis: this wing, the annex and the connecting wing.
How the Rooms Are Arranged
The front of the Koyama Family Residence Reception Wing holds the principal room and the room next to it, both facing the garden. Behind them are a Chashitsu for tea, a room for the Buddhist altar, and a room for dressing and preparing.
The principal room has the full set of formal fittings: a Tokonoma alcove, Chigaidana staggered shelves and a Tsukeshoin built-in writing desk, with square posts tied by Nageshi rails. It is a textbook shoin-style reception room.
Slender Timbers, Low Ceilings
What the agency admires in the Koyama Family Residence Reception Wing is how it carries this formality lightly. The posts and rails are slimmer than usual and the ceilings are kept low, so the room reads as refined rather than imposing.
The roof is hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) in Hongawarabuki tiles. Over the veranda, which wraps around the south and east sides, the roof breaks into a separate lower pitch in the Shikoro-buki manner, so from the garden it appears as two layers.
Sakai City records that the sliding doors and alcove of the two rooms facing the garden carry landscape paintings by Kaneko Sessō (金子雪操), an Osaka painter of the late Edo period.
Visiting the Koyama Family Residence Reception Wing
The Koyama Family Residence Reception Wing is part of a family home, and the interior is closed. None of the sources consulted mentions any viewing of the Kaneko Sessō paintings or the formal alcove.
The garden in front of the wing is walled on three sides, which puts the Koyama Family Residence Reception Wing inside the enclosure and largely out of sight from the road. Please view the estate from the public road without entering.
