Matsumura Family Residence Storehouse No. 2

A Single-Story Storehouse North of the Doma

The Matsumura Family Residence Storehouse No. 2 (松村家住宅土蔵二, Matsumura-ke Jūtaku Dozō Ni) is an end-of-Edo-period Dozo-zukuri storehouse in Shimaizumi 2-chome, Habikino, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on August 3, 2006. It stands on the estate of the Matsumura family, village headmen of Minami-Shimaizumi, north of the earth-floored Doma of the main house, with its ridge running east to west.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs database dates it to the end of the Edo period, a range it gives as 1830 to 1867. It is a single-story earthen-walled storehouse with a tiled roof, and at 31 square meters it is the largest of the three storehouses on the estate.

A Match for Storehouse No. 1

The Matsumura Family Residence Storehouse No. 2 was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the country (registration number 27-0376).

The Agency describes it as built the same way as Storehouse No. 1. The two stand side by side at the rear of the estate, one north of the reception rooms and this one north of the doma, both from the end of the Edo period and both to the same specification. They differ in size and height: Storehouse No. 1 is 3 by 2 ken and two stories tall, while Storehouse No. 2 is 4 by 2 ken on a single floor, longer and lower (a ken is roughly 1.8 meters).

Storehouse No. 2 sits behind the doma, the kitchen and workspace of the house. No published source records what either storehouse held.

Plasterer's Details: Mizukiri and Hachimaki

The roof is gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) in round-and-flat Hongawarabuki tile. The walls rise from a laid-stone base, with vertical board skirting below and white Shikkui lime plaster above.

The Agency's description singles out two details on the Matsumura Family Residence Storehouse No. 2. The first is the mizukiri, a small drip ledge where board skirting meets plaster, which throws rainwater clear of the wall below. The second is the hachimaki, a band of thicker plaster wrapped around the wall just under the eaves, which gives the top of the storehouse a firm horizontal line. Both take extra work from the plasterer, and both add shadow and depth to an otherwise plain white wall.

The door is at the center of the south side under a small projecting roof, facing the main house.

Seeing the Storehouse

The Matsumura Family Residence Storehouse No. 2 stands behind the main house on the north side of the estate. The estate is a private home with no public opening announced as of September 2026, so the storehouse cannot be visited.

From the road you can expect to see only the gatehouse and outer wall. Please do not walk around the back to peer or photograph over the walls. Directions are on the Matsumura Family Residence page.
