The Wall Along the South and East Edges

The Matsumura Family Residence Outer Wall (松村家住宅外塀, Matsumura-ke Jūtaku Sotobei) is an early-Meiji-period timber wall in Shimaizumi 2-chome, Habikino, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on August 3, 2006. It runs along the boundary of the estate of the Matsumura family, village headmen of Minami-Shimaizumi: east from the southeast corner of the nagayamon gatehouse along the south edge, then north at the southeast corner of the plot, following the road on the east side.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs database dates it to the early Meiji period and records it as a tiled timber wall about 39 meters long in total. Of the 7 registered structures on the estate, the Matsumura Family Residence Outer Wall has the longest frontage on the street.

Shaping the East Side of the Estate

The Matsumura Family Residence Outer Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the country (registration number 27-0380). The Agency's description credits it with forming the view of the estate from the east.

On the south, the gatehouse and Storehouse No. 3 make up the public face of the estate. The outer wall carries on from there, turning the corner to follow the road on the east. With a late-Edo gate and storehouse and an early-Meiji wall, the boundary of the estate from south to east was completed over two eras.

From Stone Base to Roof Tiles

The wall stands on a stone base and is timber-framed in the Shinkabe manner, with exposed posts, under a roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles. The lower part of the wall is clad in vertical boards and the upper part finished in Shikkui lime plaster.

Read from the ground up, each material has its job: stone to take rain and damp from the ground, boards to protect the wall from splashing and knocks, and plaster above. The storehouses on the same estate use the same sequence of stone base, board skirting and white plaster.

Because the posts show on the face of the wall, the board skirting and plaster are divided into panels post by post. Repeated over about 39 meters, those divisions keep the long wall from reading as a blank barrier and give it a steady rhythm.

Seeing the Outer Wall

Along with the gatehouse, the Matsumura Family Residence Outer Wall is the easiest part of the estate to see. From the road on the south, you can see the stretch continuing east from the gatehouse; along the east side of the plot, the wall follows the road northward.

Behind the wall is a private home, and no public opening had been announced as of September 2026. Do not linger against the wall or photograph over it into the grounds, and take care not to obstruct traffic on the road along the east side. Directions are on the Matsumura Family Residence page.
