What Is the Nakayama Family Residence Wall?
The Nakayama Family Residence Wall (中山家住宅塀, Nakayama-ke Jūtaku Hei) is the late Edo-period tiled wall that encloses the Nakayama estate in Bessho, Matsubara City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 2, 2004.
It follows the stone-lined water channel around the property for a registered length of 57 meters. Of the fourteen registered items on the estate, it is the only one that is a structure rather than a building.
Water and Wall
Together with the channel, the Nakayama Family Residence Wall forms a double boundary around the estate, tidying the view from outside and linking storehouse to storehouse.
It fills the gaps between buildings: from the east end of the main house north to the main storehouse, from the back gate to the nagaya, and from the nagaya south along the west side. The north and west edges of the estate are drawn by these buildings and the wall together.
Section by Section
The outer face of the Nakayama Family Residence Wall changes along its length. The 22 meters from the main house to the main storehouse are vertical boarding and black shikkui plaster; the 8 meters from the back gate to the nagaya are vertical boarding alone; and the 27 meters running south from the nagaya combine boarding with earthen wall.
On the inside, the posts are braced by stone buttress posts. The stretch between the main house and the main storehouse is finished in white plaster, the rest in earth: black outside and white inside, like the storehouse and back gate.
Seeing the Wall from Outside
The estate is a private home and the grounds are closed, but the outer face of the Nakayama Family Residence Wall runs along the water channel and can be seen from the north and west sides, where the changes of finish from section to section are easy to follow.
