A Yakuimon Gate on the Main Street

The Shinkoji Temple Sanmon Gate is a one-bay yakuimon gate facing west onto Matsuyamachi-suji, with a gabled roof of round-and-flat tiles (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Main posts set 2.7 metres apart carry paired beams and a lintel, and bearing blocks on the upper beams support a tie beam and the eave beam.

The gable has a tie beam with a vase-shaped strut, and carved beam ends project on four sides above it (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency praises the fine detail of the beam ends and the patterns carved on the tie beam, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.

What to Look For

Look for the carved beam ends and the patterns on the tie beam (Agency for Cultural Affairs), and the contrast with the Indian-style main hall of 1929 beyond.
