Shinkoji Temple

Shinkoji Temple (心光寺) in Shitaderamachi, Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, has two structures registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties: its main hall of 1929, registered on September 19, 2003, and a gate of the mid-Edo period, registered on July 8, 2008 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Both are owned by the temple.

Osaka City presents the Shinkoji main hall as one of the sights of Shitaderamachi, the temple quarter on the western slope of the Uemachi plateau.

The Two Structures

The main hall, rebuilt in reinforced concrete after a fire and said to have been designed by the head priest, takes an Indian look with a dome, multi-lobed arches and finial-like ornaments on its columns (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The gate, a one-bay yakuimon facing west onto Matsuyamachi-suji under a gabled tiled roof, is admired for its carved beam ends and tie-beam patterns (Agency for Cultural Affairs). An Edo-period gate opening onto an Indian-style hall of the early Showa years makes an unusual pair. Each structure is described on its own page.
