The Tanaka Family Residence Annex

The Tanaka Family Residence Annex (田中家住宅離れ, Tanaka-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is a single-storey detached wing built in the early Showa period on the Tanaka compound in Takaminosato, Matsubara City, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 3, 2006. It runs north to south along the boundary with the neighbouring plot, southeast of the main house.

It measures 8 by 2 and a half bays, 76 square metres, under a gabled pantile roof, the largest of the outbuildings.

Guest Rooms and Household Work Under One Roof

The Tanaka Family Residence Annex divides cleanly in two. The southern half has a veranda along its west side with an 8-mat room with an alcove and a 6-mat room behind it. The northern half sits under a stepped-down roof and holds a barn, a bathhouse and a pickling shed. Formal rooms for guests and the practical work of bathing and pickling share one building.

It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and it shows concretely what living space an early-Showa farming family kept apart from the main house.

Reading the Roofline

From the garden side, notice the drop in the ridge between the two halves: the step in the roof marks the line between reception rooms and work rooms.

Access

The annex stands against the neighbouring plot in the southeast of the compound and is unlikely to be visible from the street. Matsubara City states that the house is still lived in and that the grounds and buildings cannot be visited.
