The Tanaka Family Residence Nagayamon Gate

The Tanaka Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (田中家住宅長屋門, Tanaka-ke Jūtaku Nagayamon) is an early-Showa gatehouse on the Tanaka compound in Takaminosato, Matsubara City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 3, 2006. It runs east to west along the northern edge of the plot, northeast of the main house, and is the way into the compound.

The single-storey timber building is 5 and a half by 1 and a half bays, 20 square metres in area, with a pantile roof that is hip-and-gable at the west end and hipped at the east.

The Compound's Northern Face

The Tanaka Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it part of what forms the north side of the compound. That side faces the approach to Takami Shrine, and with the outer wall beside it the gate sets the house's appearance from the street.

The gateway is at the west end and a passage at the east, with 2 rooms between them. The gateway is 2 bays wide with a small wicket door on its east side, so one building holds two ways in.

A Roof With Two Different Ends

The two ends of the roof differ. Over the gateway at the west, a hip-and-gable end shows its triangular gable; at the east the roof simply slopes away on all sides. Walking along the street, you can see the design weight placed on the gateway end.

Seeing the Gate

The gate stands on the northern edge of the compound facing the street, so its exterior can be seen from the public road. Matsubara City states that the house is still lived in and that the grounds and buildings cannot be visited. Please do not block the gateway.
