The Tenrikyo Kitasaka Branch Church Railing (天理教北阪分教会欄干, Tenrikyō Kitasaka Bunkyōkai Rankan) is a concrete railing of around 1939 on the south side of the church grounds in Katayamacho, Kashiwara City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.

It follows the approach path for 13 metres and stands just 57 centimetres high, well below waist height. Round posts rise from a base course and carry a continuous handrail.

Why the Rankan was registered

The Tenrikyo Kitasaka Branch Church Railing was entered on the national list of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on July 12, 2005, as registration number 27-0320, as a structure that would be difficult to reproduce.

The national database classes it not as a building but as an "other structure", and counts it as one site rather than one building. It is the only one of the four registered items at Tenrikyo Kitasaka Branch Church that is not a building.

It earned its place for the same reason as its neighbours. The railing is made of concrete formed around the special wire mesh the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the "Mora-system structural mesh" (モーラ式構成網), and the agency describes it as the product of a method with no known parallel.

The mesh left in view

The detail that sets the Tenrikyo Kitasaka Branch Church Railing apart is that the wire mesh is left exposed in the spaces between the posts. In the clergy residence, the detached wing and the warehouse, the mesh is part of the wall construction, and the agency does not describe it as visible.

That makes the railing the one place where the official descriptions say the shared technique can actually be seen. What the buildings keep inside their walls, the Rankan puts on show.

A low line along the approach

At 57 centimetres, the railing works less as a barrier than as an edge, marking the side of the path at below eye level as it runs for 13 metres toward the buildings.

The Tenrikyo Kitasaka Branch Church Railing is not open to the public. The approach it lines is inside the private grounds, and visitors cannot enter.

Because the Tenrikyo Kitasaka Branch Church Railing is so low, any wall or planting along the boundary could hide it, and published sources do not confirm that it can be seen from a public street. Stay on public land and limit photography to what is visible from there.
