An Early Hybrid Building for Wine
The Katashimo Wine Food Storehouse (カタシモワインフード貯蔵庫) is a wine storehouse of the late Taisho period (1912 to 1925) in Taiheiji, Kashiwara City, Osaka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 9, 2005 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a two-storey building of timber and reinforced concrete roofed in sheet iron, with a building area of 48 square metres; registration number 27-0311.
A Storehouse for Katashimo Wine
The Katashimo Wine Food Storehouse is a storage building for the making of Katashimo wine, with a wine cellar on the ground floor and an archive room above (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a flat-roofed two-storey building whose posts and beams are a timber frame, while its outer walls and floors are of reinforced concrete: an early example of such mixed construction.
The Osaka Convention and Tourism Bureau says Katashimo Winery was founded in 1914, began making wine with the techniques of sake brewing, and is said to be the oldest surviving winery in western Japan.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape: though plain, it is one of the few surviving buildings of the local industry and gives character to the area.
What to Look For
Notice how the timber frame is combined with concrete walls and floors (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Visiting
According to the Osaka Convention and Tourism Bureau, winery tours are held from time to time by reservation, and the vineyard footpath can be walked freely. The winery is 8 minutes' walk from Ando Station on the Kintetsu Osaka Line, or 15 minutes from Kashiwara Station on the JR Yamatoji Line.
