What the Terada Family Residence Storehouse is
The Terada Family Residence Storehouse (寺田家住宅土蔵, Terada-ke Jutaku Dozo) is a late Edo period storehouse in Imamachi, Kashiwara City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 12 July 2005. It is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri building with a tiled roof, covering 29 square metres.
It stands near the middle of the plot, ranged east to west under a gabled roof, with its door on the south side. Where the inner storehouse is attached to the back of the main house, the Terada Family Residence Storehouse stands free in the middle of the grounds and is seen from all four sides.
The footing is granite laid in Nunozumi coursing. The walls are boarded vertically at the base and plastered above, the Shikkui carried over the purlins and Taruki rafters. On the upper gable end a small window is barred with iron and sheltered by its own canopy. The national database calls the building robust and essential to the composition of the estate.
Why the Terada Family Residence Storehouse was registered
The criterion cited is contribution to the historic landscape, the same one applied to the main house, the rice storehouse and the two gates. Only the annex and the inner storehouse were entered as models of design.
What is being weighed here is the estate as a composition. The Terada Family Residence Storehouse occupies the middle ground, separating the side of the plot belonging to the house from the side belonging to the annex. A water channel crosses the site from north to south around this point, and the land east of it rises a step. The storehouse sits close to that change in level.
Its registration number is 27-0324. Registering all seven together brought the buildings that frame the estate within the system, not only the conspicuous ones.
What to look at
The upper gable window is the telling detail. Iron bars fill it and a small canopy keeps the rain off. A storehouse wants as few openings as possible, yet some ventilation is unavoidable. Security, airflow and weathering are all solved in one small opening.
The granite footing deserves a look too. Coursed bond distributes the weight of heavy earthen walls evenly along the base. The inner storehouse nearby has a different footing, and comparing the two shows how the care taken varied from one store to another.
Plaster carried over purlins and rafters is there to keep embers away from timber. On the Terada Family Residence Storehouse the white surface runs right into the eaves soffit, leaving very little wood exposed.
Seeing the Terada Family Residence Storehouse
The Terada Family Residence Storehouse is privately owned and closed. Kashiwara City states that the estate as a whole cannot be visited.
Standing near the centre of the plot, it is screened from the old highway by the main house, and from the south it sits behind the gate and the boundary. There is effectively no public position from which the building can be seen.
