What the Terada Family Residence South Gate is
The Terada Family Residence South Gate (寺田家住宅南門, Terada-ke Jutaku Minamimon) is a late Edo period gate in Imamachi, Kashiwara City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 12 July 2005. It is timber built with a tiled roof and measures 3.0 metres across.
It stands on the southern boundary, a little west of centre. The frame is Shinkabe, with posts left visible; the opening is in the middle with an inward-swinging door, and a single storage room occupies the western side behind a sliding screen. Gate and store are one structure, the route through and the place to put things set side by side.
The roof is gabled and laid in Hongawarabuki. Rafters run in a single widely spaced tier, and because no ceiling is fitted the Keshō-yaneura leaves the beams and struts of the roof frame in view from below. The Terada Family Residence South Gate shows its structure as its finish.

The plan repays attention too. A single storage room sits west of the opening, closed by a sliding screen on the inside. Combining a gate with a store makes economical use of the edge of a plot where space is tight.
Note the wall construction as well. Shinkabe leaves the posts proud of the wall surface, the opposite of the ookabe method that buries them. The Terada Family Residence South Gate is privately owned and cannot be passed through. Kashiwara City states that the estate as a whole is closed to visitors.
Because the gate faces the southern boundary, its outer side can be seen from the lane along that edge. Houses stand close together here, though, and positions giving a clear frontal view are few. The roof frame is only visible from under the gate, so it cannot be checked from outside.
