What the Terada Family Residence Inner Storehouse is
The Terada Family Residence Inner Storehouse (寺田家住宅内蔵, Terada-ke Jutaku Uchigura) is a late Edo period storehouse in Imamachi, Kashiwara City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 12 July 2005. It is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri building with a tiled roof, covering 29 square metres.
It stands behind the main house, its forebay running continuously into the house itself. The forebay is the working space in front of the storehouse doors, and because it connects to the dwelling the store could be reached without going outside. The building is ranged north to south under a gabled roof, tiled in the oki-yane manner.
The outer wall is built in three bands: vertical boarding at the base, a middle section finished to look like stonework, and plaster above with a raised band running round. The boards at the base are the reason this building is known. They are planks salvaged from a Kashiwara river boat.

The Terada Family Residence Inner Storehouse was registered as a model of design, a criterion applied to only two of the seven structures here, this one and the annex.
The national database points to the care in its making: an oki-yane roof and plaster carried right over the purlins and Taruki rafters. An oki-yane is a second roof built above the body of the storehouse, so rain never touches the earthen structure and the covering alone can be renewed. Sealing the purlins and rafters in Shikkui keeps embers from finding timber.
Its registration number is 27-0323. The Teradas traded as Hojoya, dealing in fertiliser and owning river boats, and the wall of this storehouse turned the tools of that trade directly into building material.
What to look at
The boat planks come first. Kashiwara boats worked the Yamato River between Osaka and the Kawachi plain, carrying rice and fertiliser. When a hull reached the end of its life its thick, water-hardened timber was worth reusing, and Kashiwara City notes that these boards keep the memory of the boats alive.
The three-band wall is worth reading as well. Boarding at the base, stone-like render in the middle, plaster above: material and finish change with height. The logic is that the lower a surface sits, the more water and knocks it takes, so storehouse walls are always toughest at the bottom.
Look too at how the roof meets the wall. Because an oki-yane sits above the earthen body with an air space between, a narrow gap shows under the eaves when seen from the side. Seeing the Terada Family Residence Inner Storehouse
The Terada Family Residence Inner Storehouse is privately owned and closed. Kashiwara City states that the estate as a whole cannot be visited.
The building stands behind the main house and is screened from the old highway by it. The wall carrying the boat planks faces into the grounds, so it cannot be checked from any public position. Photographs and descriptions published by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and by Kashiwara City are the practical way to see it.
