What the Terada Family Residence Outer Storehouse is
The Terada Family Residence Outer Storehouse (寺田家住宅外蔵, Terada-ke Jutaku Sotogura) is a storehouse in Shinmachi, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 July 2011. It measures 6.0 metres by 4.0 metres, is built in two-storey Dozo-zukuri with a gabled Hongawarabuki roof, and covers 24 square metres.
It stands east of the inner storehouse, turned to face the main house. Where the inner storehouse is attached to the dwelling, the Terada Family Residence Outer Storehouse stands free across open ground, its entrance on the west side under a small canopy. Goods needed less often would have been kept here.
Two dates attach to the building. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database gives 1936, the year of the other structures on the estate. Kaizuka City describes it instead as a building moved here from elsewhere, and reads the carving on the bracket under its entrance canopy as the work of the late Edo or Meiji era. The sensible reading is that 1936 is the year it took its present place and form.
Why the Terada Family Residence Outer Storehouse was registered
The criterion cited is contribution to the historic landscape. The national database puts the reason plainly: this is a storehouse built in the traditional earthen-walled manner.
Among the seven structures, the main house and the new house were recognised for hybrid design and for new construction. The Terada Family Residence Outer Storehouse sits at the other end of that range, carrying older practice intact. The evidence is in the details, an Araidashi washed-mortar footing, tall vertical boarding at the base of the walls, and eaves mouldings sealed over in Shikkui plaster.
Its registration number is 27-0545. A relocated building registered alongside newly built ones tells you something about how the estate came together. It was assembled from what was available rather than ordered complete.
What to look at
The carving on the bracket supporting the entrance canopy is the key to this building. Kaizuka City dates the original construction of the Terada Family Residence Outer Storehouse to the late Edo or Meiji era on the strength of its style. It is a good example of reading the age of a moved building from a single worked member.
The footing rewards attention as well. Washed mortar, or araidashi, is finished by rinsing the surface before it fully sets so that the aggregate shows. It was a favourite of the early Showa years, which means a nineteenth-century superstructure here sits on a 1930s base.
Then the wall build-up. Vertical boards run high up the base, plaster covers the surface above, and the plaster is carried right over the eaves mouldings. The boarding protects the earthen wall from splashing rain, and on this storehouse it is taken higher than usual.
Seeing the Terada Family Residence Outer Storehouse
The Terada Family Residence Outer Storehouse is privately owned and not open. Standing towards the east of the plot, beyond the inner storehouse, it cannot be seen from the street at all.
From outside the wall, the most that shows is a stretch of tiled roof between the garden trees and the ridge of the main house, and even that is hard to separate from the roof of the inner storehouse. The footing and the boarded walls that make this building worth knowing about are not visible from any public viewpoint.
