What the Terada Family Residence New House is
The Terada Family Residence New House (寺田家住宅新宅, Terada-ke Jutaku Shintaku) is a 1958 dwelling in Shinmachi, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 July 2011. It is built of reinforced concrete, single storey with a two-storey section, and covers 139 square metres.
The other six structures on the estate went up in 1936. The Terada Family Residence New House alone is postwar. It faces the main house across a courtyard, with guest rooms in its eastern half and living rooms in its western half. The entrance is placed on the guest side, and the living side opens onto a terrace facing the south garden.
Its roof pairs a flat deck with a tiled Kirizuma-zukuri section in Sangawara-buki. Concrete carrying a tiled roof reads comfortably beside the prewar buildings around it. Kaizuka City records this as the oldest reinforced concrete building in the city.
Why the Terada Family Residence New House was registered
The Terada Family Residence New House was registered as a model of design, the criterion also applied to the main house and the main gate. The storehouses, the barn and the stone wall were entered on different grounds, for what they contribute to the historic landscape.
What the criterion picks out here is the translation of Japanese domestic design into reinforced concrete. When concrete reached ordinary houses in the 1950s it usually arrived together with a Western exterior. This house changed the structural material while keeping a tiled roof and wide openings onto the garden.
Its registration number is 27-0543. When the seven structures were registered together, this one was included although it is more than twenty years younger than the rest. The estate grew in stages, and that sequence is still legible on the ground.
What to look at
Look first at how the roofs meet. A flat horizontal line and a pitched gable sit side by side on one building. Joining the two is the difficult part of such a design, and at the Terada Family Residence New House it is solved by changing the roof height and making the switch at the step.
The terrace on the south garden repays attention too. The job usually done by a timber Engawa veranda is taken over here by a concrete floor that runs out from the living rooms.
On dating, the Agency for Cultural Affairs database and Kaizuka City agree on 1958. The claim that this is the oldest reinforced concrete building in Kaizuka comes from the city.
Seeing the Terada Family Residence New House
The Terada Family Residence New House is a private home and its interior is not open. Standing behind the main house across the courtyard, it cannot be seen whole from the street.
The roof is what gives it away. Walking north along the pavement of Prefectural Route 204, there is a point where the flat deck and the tiled gable of the New House appear beyond the ridge of the main house. The view is clearer in winter, when the garden trees are bare.
