The Ueda Family Residence in Toyonaka
The Ueda Family Residence (上田家住宅, Ueda-ke Jūtaku) in Higashi-Toyonaka-cho, Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture, is an early Showa suburban house on a hilltop residential estate; its main house and storage shed of 1933 and its annex of 1940 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties (structures) on August 13, 2012 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The three buildings carry registration numbers 27-0550 (main house), 27-0551 (annex) and 27-0552 (storage shed), all registered for their contribution to the historic landscape. The owner field in the Agency database is blank.
A House from the First Years of the Estate
Toyonaka City's newsletter says that the land around Fukatani Pond in Higashi-Toyonaka-cho 3-chome was laid out as housing from 1933, a very large development for its day. The city describes the wider school district as a record of Toyonaka's housing history: prewar estates to the north and apartment complexes of the high-growth decades in the middle.
The main house and storage shed of the Ueda Family Residence date from that same year, 1933 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency's note on the shed refers to the area as the Higashi-Toyonaka estate and calls the shed a standard type for it, so the house and its outbuildings together show a home from the estate's opening years.
How the Three Buildings Sit
The main house stands toward the north of the plot, with a veranda along its south side facing the garden. The annex stands to its east, its entrance on the lower floor turned toward the main house. The storage shed sits behind the main house (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The main house is a single-storey gabled building with a Western-style reception room beside the east entrance, which the Agency treats as typical of early Showa suburban houses that set Japanese and Western rooms side by side. The annex has two floors under a hip-and-gable roof: a sukiya-style lower floor faced in cedar bark and an upper sunroom with bay windows; it was extended in 1994. The shed is a small lean-to with a short counter-pitch and a toilet built in. Each building has its own page.
Visiting and Getting There
No official information on visits was found. The buildings may still be lived in, so please stay off the property and look only from the street.
The nearest station is Shōji Station on the Osaka Monorail; the Ueda Family Residence lies to the east-southeast, about 700 metres in a straight line (an estimate from the Geospatial Information Authority place-name search). The neighbourhood is quiet and residential, with Fukatani Pond close by.
