An Older Pavilion Moved to the Estate
The Wada Family Residence Detached Wing (和田家住宅離れ, Wada-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is a Taisho-period reception pavilion moved in 1930 to the Wada family estate in Miyamotocho, Kishiwada City, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 21 August 2002. It stands on its own to the west of the main house.
It was built in the Taisho period (1912 to 1925) and brought to the site in 1930, the year the rest of the estate was completed. The sources consulted do not say where it stood before. It is a single-storey timber building under an Irimoya-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles, with a building area of 31 square metres.
Why It Was Registered
The Wada Family Residence Detached Wing was registered as a model of its type. The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises its alcove, shelves and built-in desk as understated and of high quality, and describes the whole as Shoin-zukuri of delicate proportions.
Inside are an 8-mat Zashiki reception room, an 8-mat anteroom and a kitchen. With its own kitchen, the wing could host guests or house a stay independently of the main house.
What to Look For
The Tokonoma alcove, the Chigaidana staggered shelves and the Tsukeshoin desk alcove are the classic trio of a shoin-style room. Here they are kept plain, their quality carried by timber and proportion rather than ornament. The delicate proportions the agency mentions come down to choices like the slenderness of posts, the height of lintels and the thickness of shelf boards.
Outside, a veranda with a railing runs along two sides. Where the ground drops away, the floor is carried on posts in the manner of Kakezukuri, the stilted construction best known from hillside temple halls, here applied to a small domestic pavilion.
Visiting the Detached Wing
The Wada Family Residence Detached Wing stands west of the main house, inside the estate walls, and is not open to the public. It is almost impossible to see from the street.
