A Village Headman's Estate in Sennan

The Yamada Family Residence (山田家住宅, Yamada-ke Jūtaku) in Shinge, Sennan City, Osaka Prefecture, is an Edo-period Shōya estate whose eight buildings, the oldest a storehouse of 1794, were registered in 2002, each as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Yamadas were wealthy farmers who served as shōya, the hereditary village headmen who collected the rice tax and kept order on behalf of the domain. Local tourism material and the family's preservation council say the role ran from the late 17th century to the early years of Meiji. When the office disappeared, the compound stayed intact. Sennan City describes the Yamada Family Residence as a senior headman's estate that keeps its Edo-period form almost unchanged, and it was the first property in the city to be registered.

Registration in Japan works building by building, so the estate holds eight separate entries: the main house, the entrance wing, the kitchen wing, the rice storehouse, the storehouse, the front gate, the Nagayamon gate and the earthen wall. The dates spread across more than a century. The storehouse was built in 1794, the rice storehouse in 1854 and the main house in 1863, while the two gates and the wall are attributed to the last decades of the Edo period. The kitchen wing is an Edo building remodeled in 1921.

The plot covers about 2,800 square meters, roughly 840 tsubo. Locally the site is simply "Yamada-ke," and signs sometimes call it the former headman's estate.

How the Compound Is Laid Out

What strikes a first-time visitor is the number of gates. Coming from the road on the south side, you pass through two before reaching the forecourt of the main house. The outer front gate opens straight onto the street; behind it stands a Nagayamon, a gatehouse with rooms along its length, running almost the full width of the plot at about 30 meters. Both openings sit toward the east end, so the path runs straight in.

Beyond the Nagayamon lies the forecourt, with the rice storehouse on its east side and the main house ahead. The entrance wing, with its formal step, is attached on the west of the main house and the kitchen wing, topped by a smoke vent, on the east. The storehouse sits at the back, north of the main house. Rice for tax went into the building nearest the road; family valuables went into the one farthest from it.

An earthen wall roofed with hongawarabuki tiles encloses the grounds in four stretches totaling 82 meters, with stonework taking up the changes in ground level along the lane.

On an open day, the order that makes the layout easiest to read is front gate, Nagayamon, forecourt and rice storehouse, main house with its two wings, and finally the storehouse and wall at the back.

Open Days and Visiting

The Yamada Family Residence is still a private home. Sennan City and the local tourism association ask visitors not to call outside the scheduled open days.

Public open days are normally held on the 4th Sunday of each month except December, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and events sometimes extend an opening across a Saturday and Sunday. For fiscal 2026 the tourism association notes that there will also be no openings in June, July or August. Dates are announced in the Sennan City newsletter and on the city's archaeological center news page.

No booking is needed. Visitors are asked for a voluntary contribution of 100 yen toward upkeep. On open days the rice storehouse serves as a small folk museum, and concerts and exhibitions are sometimes held in the earthen-floored hall of the main house and in the Nagayamon.

The openings are run by the Yamada Family Residence Preservation Council, set up in 2004, together with the owners.

One caution: the Osaka Cultural Properties Navi listing still says visits are suspended for the time being. Sennan City's own notices in September 2026 show open days going ahead, and this page follows the city.

Getting There

The nearest station is Shinge on the JR Hanwa Line. Sennan City gives the walk as about 5 minutes, and a signboard at the station points the way. The tourism association puts it at 4 minutes.

Drivers can park beside the Nagayamon, though the approach lane is narrow. Inquiries go to the Lifelong Learning Division of the Sennan City Board of Education (phone 072-483-2583).

Published guidance does not say whether photography is allowed inside. Ask at the reception on the day before photographing rooms or displays.
