What the Nagayamon Gate Is

The Yamada Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (山田家住宅長屋門, Yamada-ke Jūtaku Nagayamon) is a late Edo-period Nagayamon gatehouse standing inside the front gate of the Yamada estate in Shinge, Sennan City, Osaka Prefecture, registered in 2002 as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. It is the inner of the estate's two gates.

It is a single-storey timber building under a gabled roof of hongawarabuki tiles, with a building area of 148 square meters. Its frontage reaches about 30 meters, nearly the full width of the plot, and its passage opens toward the east end to line up with the front gate.

Of the eight registered buildings, the Yamada Family Residence Nagayamon Gate has the largest footprint, larger even than the 119 square meters of the main house.

The Long Roof That Defines the Estate

The gatehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs commentary says its long roof gives the headman's estate its character. Step through the front gate and a line of heavy tiles fills your view from side to side, a wall between the lane and the forecourt as much as a roof.

Together with the front gate, it forms a double entrance. The outer gate separates the estate from the lane; the inner one closes off the forecourt. A headman's house was the village office and the place where tax rice arrived, and control over who came and went needed to be visible.

What to Look For

The 30-meter length is best felt standing in front of it. The eaves run from one edge of your view to the other, with barred windows set beneath them. Osaka Cultural Properties Navi describes these as yoriki-mado with thick horizontal bars.

Walk through and turn round from the forecourt. The Yamada Family Residence Nagayamon Gate forms the entire south side of the forecourt, with the rice storehouse to the right and the main house ahead.

Visiting the Nagayamon Gate

On public open days, visitors enter the forecourt through the Yamada Family Residence Nagayamon Gate. Its rooms are sometimes used for exhibitions, and on those days you can see inside.
