A Meiji-era compound in eastern Osaka
The Yokouchi Family Residence (横内家住宅, Yokouchi-ke Jūtaku) in Shijocho, Higashiosaka City, Osaka Prefecture, is a private house whose main building dates from the early Meiji period (1868-1882); five of its structures were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2015.
All five stand on the same plot at 433 Shijocho. A long gatehouse fronts the main house, a detached reception wing joined to it by a corridor runs along the street, a small garden gate divides the forecourt from the main garden, and an earthen wall on a stone base wraps the northwest corner of the property. Because the gate, the walls and the wing all survive, the plan of the Yokouchi Family Residence can still be read from outside.
Layers from Meiji to early Shōwa
The oldest parts of the Yokouchi Family Residence are the main house and the front gate. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates both to the early Meiji period and records that both were altered in the early Shōwa period (1926-1945). The inner parlor wing was built in 1897 and moved to its present position in 1930.
The earthen wall dates from the late Meiji period (1898-1912), and the roji gate and wall from early Shōwa. According to the agency, the head of the family in the early Shōwa years was a man of letters, and under him the main house was reworked with refined sukiya detailing. One room inside the front gate building was also finished as a sukiya-style tatami room.
The relocation of the wing and the building of the roji gate fall in the same years. What survives, then, is a Meiji house with a layer of 1930s connoisseurship laid over it.
How the compound is laid out
The main house faces north on a plot that runs east to west, and the front gate stands in front of it. Behind the gate is a forecourt, onto which the formal entrance of the main house, the Shikidai, opens.
The roji gate and its short walls run between the west post of that entrance and the southwest corner post of the gatehouse, screening the main garden from the forecourt. The agency describes them as adding character to the garden together with the cobbled paving and planting.
The inner parlor wing extends from the upper end of the main house along a corridor and stands beside the street. The earthen wall turns a right angle around the northwest side of the plot for 31 metres; its stone base is tallest on the west, where the road falls away.
Five registered structures
All five structures of the Yokouchi Family Residence were registered on August 4, 2015 (numbers 27-0631 to 27-0635). Each was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
The main house is a single-storey timber building with a building area of 149 m². The inner parlor wing, also single-storey, covers 58 m², and the front gate 33 m². The roji gate and wall and the earthen wall are registered as structures other than buildings; the earthen wall is 31 metres long.
The agency calls the main house a fine minka that combines formality with taste, and singles out the inner parlor wing and the earthen wall for what they add to the village streetscape.
Visiting
The Yokouchi Family Residence is a private home. We found no information on public access as of October 2026, so plan on not entering the grounds or the buildings.
According to the agency, the inner parlor wing stands along the street and the earthen wall encloses the street side of the plot, so the outer face of the compound is what a visitor sees from the road. People live here: keep your visit short, do not peer over walls or linger at the gate, and limit photographs to the exterior from the public road without blocking traffic.
Getting there
The nearest station to the Yokouchi Family Residence is Hyotanyama on the Kintetsu Nara Line. The house lies roughly 700 metres southeast of the station in a straight line (an estimate from the coordinates of the station and the property). We found no information on parking for visitors.
The surrounding streets are mostly narrow residential lanes, and walking from the station is the easiest way to come.
