A Meiji pavilion beside the street
The Yokouchi Family Residence Inner Parlor Wing (横内家住宅奥座敷棟, okuzashiki-tō) in Shijocho, Higashiosaka City, Osaka Prefecture, is a single-storey timber reception wing built in 1897; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015.
The wing is linked by a corridor to the upper end of the main house and stands along the street. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that it was moved to this spot in 1930. It covers 58 m². Where it stood before the move is not stated in published sources.
Two roof shapes on one building
The Yokouchi inner parlor wing has a pantiled roof finished in two different ways: the east end is hip-and-gable, the west end a plain hipped slope. Lean-to roofs, or Geya, run around it and carry the eaves low.
From the east a triangular gable rises above the hips; from the west the roof simply slides away on all sides. The agency credits the wing with adding to the village streetscape, and much of that comes from this changing roofline.
A ten-mat room and a slatted transom
Inside are two rooms side by side, a main room of ten tatami mats and a second of six, with an veranda along the northeast side. The main room has a full set of formal alcove fittings, and an Osa-ranma, a transom of closely set thin slats, decorates the opening between the two rooms.
The agency describes the Yokouchi inner parlor wing as an open, elegant detached pavilion. It was registered on August 4, 2015 (number 27-0632), under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
The move in 1930 falls in the same early Shōwa years in which the main house was refitted in sukiya style under a literary head of the family. Bringing a Meiji pavilion onto the property at that moment says something about the taste of the household then.
Visiting
The Yokouchi inner parlor wing is part of a private home, and we found no information on public access to the interior as of October 2026, so the alcove and transom cannot currently be seen.
Because it stands along the street, its roof and eaves can probably be seen from the public road. Walk a few steps along the street and the difference between the two roof ends becomes clear. People live here, so keep your stop brief.
