Ganshoji Temple Main Entrance

A Grand Porch for the Temple's Working Wing

The Ganshoji Temple Main Entrance (願正寺大玄関, Ganshōji Ōgenkan) in Gofukumotomachi, Saga City, Saga Prefecture, is an entrance building completed in 1934 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 14 October 2021. It stands south-east of the Main Hall, a two-storey timber building with a plain gabled roof of pantiles, 24.7 metres by 7 metres in plan and with a building area of 180 square metres.

It is the southernmost of three buildings that run along the east side of the precinct, followed to the north by the Great Hall and the Kihinshitsu guest hall. Facing south, it serves as the public face of that whole eastern range.

The temple's chronology records that the Main Entrance was built new in 1934 together with the Great Hall, and altered in 1978 and again in 2010. In May 2026 the temple told visitors it was carrying out repairs to stop roof leaks.

Two Doors, One Facade

The Ganshoji Temple Main Entrance was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape: its long gabled roof and oversized porch shape the view south-east of the Main Hall.

The facade is easy to read. Towards the western end of the south front, a large porch with its own hipped-and-gabled Irimoya-zukuri roof projects forward, flanked by a pair of Katōmado, windows whose heads are cut in a flame- or bell-shaped curve and which instantly mark the building as belonging to a temple. East of the porch is a second, humbler entrance under a simple canopy. One door for receiving guests, one for the everyday comings and goings of temple life, set side by side on the same front.

Inside, the ground floor holds a large hall and, in the south-west corner, the temple office; above the office are two rooms of eight tatami mats each. The Agency for Cultural Affairs picks out the column-free interior as the building's defining feature: past the porch, the hall opens across the full 7-metre depth without a single intermediate post.

What to Notice

For the whole front, step back a little to the south. Against a gable 24.7 metres long, the porch at the western end juts out boldly, and the composition is deliberately off-centre.

Closer in, compare the curved window heads either side of the porch with the plain canopy over the side entrance to the east. The roofs alone tell you which door is for guests.

The upstairs rooms sit over the office in the south-west. The large ground-floor hall takes up most of the plan, with the office and the upper rooms gathered towards that corner.

Visiting the Main Entrance

The exterior of the Ganshoji Temple Main Entrance can be seen freely from the grounds, and the temple website lists no admission fee. The building houses the temple office and is in daily use, so it is not open for sightseeing.

As of May 2026 the temple was warning that the leak repairs made coming and going inconvenient; depending on progress, scaffolding or hoarding may still be in place.
