A Meiji Station on the Karatsu Line

The JR Karatsu Line Ogi Station Main Building (ＪＲ唐津線小城駅本屋) is the wooden station building of Ogi Station on the JR Karatsu Line at Mikazuki-cho, Ogi City, Saga Prefecture, built in the late Meiji era (1898–1912). It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 25, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey wooden building with a tiled roof and a building area of 192 square metres, renovated in 2015, registration number 41-0097, owned by Ogi City.

A Coal Railway

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the JR Karatsu Line Ogi Station Main Building is an intermediate station on the Karatsu Line, laid mainly to carry coal. The line runs between Kubota and Nishi-Karatsu in Saga Prefecture and once carried coal from the mines along it to the port of Karatsu.

The JR Karatsu Line Ogi Station Main Building keeps much of its appearance from the opening of the station and has become the face of the town (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

What to Look For

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the JR Karatsu Line Ogi Station Main Building is a single-storey wooden building 19 metres by 10 metres under a hipped roof, with pent roofs on all four sides. The outer walls are plastered above vertical board panelling.

The ticket window fittings that survive inside are a highlight (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The JR Karatsu Line Ogi Station Main Building is in use as Ogi Station on the JR Karatsu Line. Please do not disturb passengers when looking around.
